Looking for Dual Bay External Enclosure

Platform, that doesn't appear to have USB2 as CityK desires. CityK, what about something from Lacie? The products come with the hard drives so they'll cost a hair more than the do-it-yourself route, but you should be able to find just about anything you want. Here's a 1TB External for under...

NEWZ: All New Internet Explorer -->7<-- Coming In 200

I dislike having to clean up the downlaod manager as well, but it's only 1 button to do so. I get progress bars with d/l speed & time remaining estimates; what else does it need to be 'proper'? I don't consider Options being under Tools to be hidden when that is what Windows users are used to...

NEWZ: Fujitsu 120 GB 2.5-inch Notebook HD

Get a notebook with a DVD burner, dual-layer if you can afford the media. Then carry a handful of blank disks. Not much added bulk that way. Or, as mubs says, an external drive. An 80+GB notebook drive in a USB2 enclosure shouldn't require a separate power adapter. Coupled with a short USB2...

NEWZ: Fujitsu 120 GB 2.5-inch Notebook HD

    1. If the notebook fails, install the drives in another or in a desktop. Now, if you're talking the notebook HD fails, well, that's what backups are for. 2. No mention of spindle speed in the Computerworld article. I'm too lazy to look it up so I'm assuming 5400 RPM.

    Dell 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect LCD, $679.15

I'm thinking a 3 wide x 2 high array of these puppies would be perfect here at the office. Lots of room for the security monitors I check regularly. I'd need a cubicle larger than my bosses to hold them, though, and there's no way my laptop could drive more than one.

    100 TeraByte Tape Cartridges

Depends on the show. Many are straight episodic and each storyline is wrapped up in 24 minutes. But there are plenty of serials as well. The thing about DB/DBZ/etc is that a single fight can last for 6+ episodes. I think that's because Toriyama doesn't really know what else to do with the...

I could say that anime/manga is generally superior to the other genres you mention, but that would be opinion and not fact. While I'm mentioning opinions, it seems your problem is that anime/manga is gaining in popularity and is apparently more profitable for retailers. If your retailer is...

    Dell 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect LCD, $679.15

Buck, what kind of lighting is in the room with you and the glowing LCD? I'm wondering if you're trying to use it in a low-light area. I would think your concerns about brightness would be legit if so, but would also caution you against too much low-light viewing as it can promote eye strain.

    Review of Hybrid Lexus RX400H

As I did before in another thread, I still maintain that Hybrids are a necessary evolutionary step before we get to BEVs. Hybrids as they are now, and likely will be over the next couple of auto generations (4-6 years per automotive gen), are doing the following: - Getting consumers to trust...

    More serious Windows security woes

mubs, the answer is that it doesn't take as much in the way of services to get it going & keep it going. And we all know IBM is predominantly a services company now. Seriously, their quick-start ERP deployments take 3-6 months vs. 9-18 months on Unix or Windows. There are 'solution edition'...

    More serious Windows security woes

Not any OS. i5/OS (formerly OS/400) would be immune as all OS objects are digitally signed and the signatures are evaluated when the objects are loaded/executed (as well as when installed/restored). Also, program objects, the equivalent of EXEs and DLLs, can't be modified by normal commands or...

    Buying some iPod shuffles...

I haven't read Friday since it first came out. Love the Michael Whelan cover. Heck, I love most of his artwork & have a signed print of McCaffrey's White Dragon hanging in my family room just a few feet from his dragon sculpture. I think I have pretty much all of Heinlein's works in one form...

    Backup solution -- dumb idea?

What Will said. Anything can go bad just sitting on the shelf. DVDs & CDs can be subject to rot under some conditions. A hard drive will be more subject to wear/tear during power on/off cycles but I would think it would be no less stable when 'on the shelf'. Optical media withstands most...

Installing drives in a 320 Supermicro SCA box?

If your SCA box is assigning SCSI IDs, you should probably de-assign IDs on the drives themselves. Try just removing all of the drive assignment jumpers from the drives. I guess that would make them ID 0. Alternately (and doubtful), check the drive's spec sheet to see if there's a different...

    Automated paging systems

There should be Palm OS apps for handhelds with connectivity that will trigger an alarm (continuing, vs. just the initial alert) when either an email or an SMS arrives. I'm pretty sure I read about something like that for the Treo smartphone in the forums at treocentral.com

    Automated paging systems

I do this through my Sprint account. I get an SMS for every email in my corporate in-box. I imagine you may be able to email the alert to your cel phone's email account and set up such an SMS alert rule. If your cel provider has that functionality it should be easy enough.

Cheetah 15.3 or 15.4 for boot drive?

I'm still using an original 18GB X15 as my boot drive and my wife's PC has a 36GB Atlas 10K II. I think they make for great boot drives. But really, we just don't need that kind of performance from our storage drives, so I buy ATA for that. Even the DVR that can record dual HDTV streams is...

Does Dell 1704FPV use the same panel as Samsung's 711T?

    Taste of Freedom for Iraq

Is it a good thing that Saddam is out? Debatable. To us he was evil, but we're not Iraqi citizens and we don't live in that culture. The number of people who still fight for his cause today has to make you believe that at least some percentage of the Iraqi citizenry liked him & his rule...
