question Intel vs Marvell SATA III controller

I'm moving my current Intel X25-M-G2 to my wife's PC, and putting a 128 GB Samsung 830 (SATA III) into my computer. My motherboard (Asus P8p67 pro, see below) has both an Intel SATA III (built into the P67chipset from what I can tell) and Marvell 9120 SATA III controller. I'm wondering which...

    Christmas 2011 PC for Wife

Today she had some Photoshop work to do, so I made her do it on my computer (i7 2600K, 16 GB RAM, Intel X25-M-G2 that held the picture) to compare it to hers. She was very impressed with the speed that photos opened and saved, and somewhat impressed with the speed of actually doing the photo...

Acronis True Image Home 2011 64 bit

I'm using the Windows 7 backup nightly at 3 am to an internal HD (my regular data and a system drive image), periodic sync toy backups to an external drive and to a networked drive of really important stuff, Crashplan to an external drive, and Crashplan to the cloud. I think I'm covered. I'd...

Congratulations to WD for finding a whole new way to make hard drives wrong

If these are meant as external drives, what's the big deal just going from the drive to a USB interface rather than from the drive to SATA to USB? I know it sucks to not have a SATA interface on the drive for situations like this, but what small percent of external drives would ever get removed...

File syncing services that allow unlimited data like Windows Live Mesh

I'm a happy customer of Crashplan now, and use their application to backup to their cloud (which is what I pay for) and to an external HD. IIRC, Crashplan will try to compress your data, which is nice, but you then need their application to recovery anything. I haven't played with it enough to...

    Gadgets in Windows?

Been using Rainmeter for a while now. I really like it. Once you get used to it, it's not bad to edit/configure. Light on system resources (14 MB to display current weather, future forecast, two radar maps, system utilization, Gmail app, and a Winamp controller).

Big fan of SyncToy for simple backups, even local (non-LAN).

    CPU prices - stagnant?

Yes, Thailand flooding. But what natural disaster do we have to explain the lack of price drops in CPUs (mid- or midlle-high range, at least)? Oh yeah, the Bulldozer disaster. Thanks AMD.

    CPU prices - stagnant?

I just saw that the Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0 GHz CPU I bought almost 1 year ago for $99 is still $99. I would think that a lower-end CPU would fall in price, and perhaps even no longer be available in favor or newer models. Was the Bulldozer fiasco that crippling for AMD? On the Intel side...

    Christmas 2011 PC for Wife

No, but when she sees that I spent considerably more at Newegg than the $400-600 I quoted her, I'll have some explaining to do. Even now, she's not completely comfortable with spending that kind of money, as am I now that I think about the marginal gain going from from E7200.

I believe drives like the Crucial M4 (especially with the newer firmwear) and Samsung 830 are significantly faster. Plus, I'd love to have even a little more space.

    Christmas 2011 PC for Wife

Changing her work habits would be the obvious place to start (opening >20 pictures at a time?!), and yet, the worst place to start. Behavior is hard to change. DDR2 RAM seem expensive compared to DDR3. I can get 16 GB of DDR3 1600 for <$100, yet DDR2 1066 runs $60 for 2x2 GB. Makes me cringe...

    Nice New Antec Case

I gotta say, cases have come a long ways. I remember when the choices were something expensive, beige or something that looked like a child's toy. I also like how 60 and 80 mm fans seem to have given way to 120 mm fans as the standard size.

    Recommendations on USB memory sticks?

Anybody have a small USB drive that they like? I'm looking for something I could clip to my ID to ensure that I always have it with me. Seems there is nothing like this in the world of USB3, although that's not a huge issue since >95% of the computers I use at work don't have USB3. PNY Micro...

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

Right now I'm in love with my two 2.5" 1 TB Toshiba Canvio drives - they've never given me any trouble, even when copying stuff that totaled ~900 GB in size, nor when I've set CrashPlan to backup to them continuously.

Huh. I disabled the power saving mode on the drive using the included software, which interestingly, wouldn't work (settings didn't appear to be saved) when I turned the USB power savings feature on through Windows. My Toshiba Canvios work great - they will power down (off?) but come back as...

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

Allow me to clarify - the Seagate drive would have been a single copy of all my data. I would otherwise have had another copy sitting on internal WD Caviar Green drives, a copy on CrashPlan, and selected things on external Toshiba drives and even across my network on my wife's PC and the HTPC.

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

Recently purchased this from Best Buy for $220, now on sale for $200. Thought it was reasonably priced, especially considering the flooding, and it would be convenient as a single drive could hold all my current and planned backup for the next year. Three problems: 1. As a 3.5" drive, it...

    My new system

I noticed more difficulty hitting 4.7+ GHz when I went from 2x4 GB to 4X4 GB sticks. Makes no sense to me since P67 boards (and I presume Z68) can keep the memory at nominal speeds even with varied (multiplier) overclocks.

    Christmas 2011 PC for Wife

The other big question then is GPU. So what would give better performance in Windows 7 and Photoshop (CS2, unlikely to upgrade anytime soon), Intel's HD2000, Intels HD3000, or my old GeForce 7900GS (which I believe only does DX9)? I hate the idea of slapping a big, power hungry card into an...

    Christmas 2011 PC for Wife

    Christmas 2011 PC for Wife

I suspect the Intel HD3000, or maybe even 2000, will be good enough for my wife. Not sure how the GeForce 7900GS compares - older tech, but a discrete card with it's own memory. If she did some gaming I'd more seriously look at Llano, but for the same price I can get 33% better Photoshop...

I've been using an Asus P8P67 and I don't consider it blinged out. Xeon E3's start at ~$200, that board is $190. My budget is more along the lines of an i3 ($130 perhaps) and an Asus P8H67 for about $105. Especially if I'll spring >$150 for an SSD. I suspect I'll stick with consumer stuff for...

Poll: How much data do you take care of?

Music collection is about 1 TB. Pictures are maybe 150 GB Home videos are about 150 GB. Assorted other files are 100 GB. I suspect this is pretty typical for a family PC. Not sure how much we use at work, and I'm not responsible for it anyway, but I know we had 12 TB of storage delivered the...
