    New home! Advice welcome

Well, my relatively inexpensive home is in Rochester. I have a classmate who, from what I can tell, bought a similar house in Indianapolis for $30,000 less than I paid. A friend just bought a roughly similar house, maybe a bit less updated, in a suburb of Minneapolis for $75,000 more...

Later this month we'll be doing a walk through with the inspector, and will specifically ask about the roof. I initially thought it was worse than the report specified - it had 3 categories, and it was in the middle. I need to figure out specifically what that means.

At least now I can offer students something of real value, for free. And not "Real Player" free where you can't find the damn free version. And not the "free" version that installs a bunch of programs you hate.

    Consulting job blues

Sometime during my second year medical school I ran across another student in another program who told me that he worked with a publisher who have him review stuff, which was pretty easy and he could then sell the books online. He gave me his contact's email address, who seemed happy to have me...

RLL drives - blast from the past!

Maybe that was it then. Doing a quick search, I see that the higher-end Stacker-enabled systems used a controller card - maybe that was the controller card I saw inside. I don't remember seeing any jumpers on it, which sounds consistent with a Stacker card.

RLL drives - blast from the past!

That computer was running Windows 3.1 and later Windows 95, and I never remember seeing any application called "Stacker" or "Doublespace" - would I have seen such a thing listed under "programs" or whatnot? And even if I did, there's a chance I wouldn't have remembered it, of course.

Wow, interesting discussion. Makes my domestic tech support calls look absolutely kindergarten. Well, they basically are. Time and Merc, when I move, can I get you guys to run tech support for my family?

RLL drives - blast from the past!

I was reading at the Redhill site, and came across a discussion of MFM and RLL, something that is totally new to me. At least I think it is. My first computer was a Tandy, I believe a 386 that I got in the fall of 1991. My second computer, which we got around 1994, was a hand-me-down/gift...

Safety The hot tub is surrounded by a wooden/deck that doubles as a fence. There is a side door, and a double door going out from the "shed" area - I'll put some sort of small deadbolt/latch thingy on both doors. I'll change the locks. Since we're on a corner lot at the entrance to the...

    New home! Advice welcome

I love the lawn service idea except that mowing can be our built-in source of exercise. I figure a reel mower would make it the most pleasant. Of course, depending on how my grass allergy does any grass cutting could be just miserable. Its been 10 years since I've cut any grass.

Anybody know anything about reel mowers - you know, the old non-motorized kind with the spinning blades? I actually used an ancient one many years ago, and found it to be decent. I'm also not a big fan of the noise and exhaust of power mowers. I just fear not being able to mow for a few days...

    Least awful vomit box

Next time I boot into Ubuntu I'll test out some different file formats. But I'm pretty sure I was able to play avi's just fine. Automatix includes a codec pack that I installed - too me maybe 2 minutes and 2 brain cells. If I'm able to get video playback going it can't be that hard.

Bargain, no. But worth my money, yes. When I built my current system back in February, I went with a 7900GS, partly because I was avoiding ATi and their not so great Linux support. So far I've been pleased.

That's about what I remember, and why after dialing in the tighter timings I stopped. I'm wondering if I should bother clocking my memory up. It's at 1:1 with the FSB at 400 MHz (I do like the symmetry) at 4-4-4-12-24 2T, which is what it's rated for. Anybody think it's worth it to try...

    Phone-PDA opinions

Not necessarily true with the newer devices that use NVRAM. My Axim doesn't die without a battery. Also, I don't think the PalmOS is much different on a Treo than on a vanilla Palm (say, E or E2). The only disadvantage as far as I can tell to having a Palm+phone is the size/weight, greater...

    Quiet 120mm fan

Max - will your memory handle more aggressive timings? I see you're running at 5-5-5-15, and perhaps you could get a little more performance without much extra noise/heat by going with something more aggressive. I've been happy that my memory does 4-4-4-12 2T, and I thought I remembered it...

    Phone-PDA opinions

I think for the simple PDA tasks, a Palm OS device would do great, and I see no reason to go Windows Mobile, even if Palm OS is ancient. Doesn't that just limit you to Treos? I've used both Palm OS ad PPC, but I've intentionally avoided the cell phone-PDA thing because of potential medical...

    Mortgages

The contingency gives them some time to find an acceptable home to purchase. I too have a Ninja. A local bank has a "physician loan" program that most of the residents at Mayo use - zero down, they don't look at student loans to calculate your debt ratios (good, since my med school loans are larger than my mortgage!), reasonable closing costs (about 1.8% of the loan amount), and no need for...
