Most likely they just have multiple connections that are load ballanced. If one (or perhpas several) where cut the remaining pipes were either not prepared for the load or the failover routing wasn't performed as effectivley as possible.

If you have the 1st model then it looked like only pins 1/2 needed to be jumpered. I don't think it would hurt if you mis-jumpered the drive, just turn off power and adjust the jumpers as needed.

Just make a new folder off root, mine is called /share and is stored on its own partition. However you are free to use the /home directory if you want, even if you dont create an actual user with that name.
