    Folding@Home

I know you can get a mesage that the unit is expired and a new one will be re-downloaded. I've seen this a few times when restarting a folder after having not folded for a season. But I have no idea if there are any checks in place during a single WU to ensure that it isn't going to be expired...

i wonder if this machine is even fast enough.... 200MHz, but it sits mostly idle and is running 24/7... I remember the baseline for FAH being a pII/Celeron 400MHz that is on 8 hours per day or more. Hope my units aren't expiring...

Could be DNS failure/lag. Is your computer.router set to DHCP on that system? I suggest you try to drop to command line and type: c:\> ipconfig /flushdns c:\> ping www.yahoo.com Notice the time between hitting enter and the following line "Pinging yahoo.com [216.109.112.135] with 32...

Easy way to fry your new industrial motherboard, SCSI, etc

yeah, but that would amount to over $300 for dual redundant hostswap PSU that meets our needs. The current PSUs cost more than that, however are not ATX 1.2 compatible. The converter was deemed sufficient.

Easy way to fry your new industrial motherboard, SCSI, etc

Well, Monday I found a very easy way to fry your new $500 industrial PC motherboard, 10k SCSI drive, and an IDE CD-ROM too. If your motherboard comes with a very cheap 4pin molex to 4pin Pentium4 power connector simply connect the molex connector upside down on 1 lead and right side up on the...

card and software suck last time I took a look. Nothing really bad with the hardware, except for maybe hardware conflicts... Required a slipstreamed install if using 2k or XP.. Image mounting

maxburn, I regularly mount over 100 different images, all from a mapped network drive using daemon tools. There is no limitation when using a mapped network drive or a UNC path. you may want to try awxDTools or fastMount to easily mount/umount images w/ Daemon tools.

    No SoundStorm in NForce 4

I don't think VIA made a good chipset till the kt266, everything previous was either ok or bad. Intel 440BX was a great chipset, it appears the 845/865/875 are also very good chipsets, but just aren't destined to have the life span of the 440BX. I think Nvidia's chipsets have all been good...

Old Backpack hard drive works on all but one computer

Unfortunately the BIOS is where you'd need to go to adjust the ECP/EPP/Bi directional or standard parallel port options. Perhaps some readng at the manufacturer's webpage or simply asking a tech from a retail store that specializes in laptops will garner you the answer to reaching the BIOS.

    Helpful hint from Merc

Yup, your application/codec determines what kind of graphics acceleration to use. Using overlay greatly enhances the ability of the graphics card to process the video rather than your host processer. For example, I've seen near 100% CPU usage and dropped frames on an Athlon system when not using...

That's usually an option in your burning software as I have not encountered a drive where that was mandatory since the 4x 2x ?x CD burning days.

Why does this thing seem so fast?

It's probably software. Optimized software offers the biggest advantages in performance compared to hardware. If you've got a good install and don't have much junk (updates included) slowing things down then a pII system can still be pretty snappy. I wouldn't want to do MPEG encoding on it, but...

I would say you're probably being over precautious. Faster Merdia - When, Where?

actually lunar, it's pretty easy. In windows you can simply drag and drop your files into smartPAR and calculate the parity. burn the parity file along with your other discs. If your files are not zip or rar sets and instead are just misc files you can use quickPAR to calculate parity in a...

Sounds like a winsock problem possibly... if they have XP SP2 you can reset winsock with the follwoing command: netsh winsock reset catalog And it would be worth your while to reset TCP/IP while you're there with the following: netsh int ip reset c:\reset.log or just type netsh <enter>...

Playing Quake 3 online: How important is the video card????

For the most part the vid card requirement should be the same as in single player mode. The exception is when you may have a large number of players on the screen at once. I believe that a TNT2m64/vanta is about the minimum you'd really want to play quake 3 on. With the current graphics cards...
