All 4 that I have looked at used Micron Technology branded pc2700 RAM. Looked exactly like RAM you'd buy from crucial. I don't remember seeing any crucial name on it though, just micron. I didn't look at the chips or PCB, but with a micron sticker I'd assume it was micron RAM.

WinXP third party drivers without a f*&%ing floppy

Sorry, that came across as pretty critical. What I meant by that is that you have to be smarter to install using the NT installer now than you used to be previously because of the limitations of the installer not keeping up to date with current hardware configs. It was in no way meant to be...

WinXP third party drivers without a f*&%ing floppy

MS created this installer for winNT .. It has been only minorly updated since the mid 90's.. that's what they were thinking.. Initially, at this time a lot people had to boot from a floppy to start the setup because they didnt have a machine that could boot from the CD. EVERYONE had a floppy...

    Samsung HDD running at 110F/43C?

Your temps seem inline with my experiences. Please note that Samsung's temp monitor for SMART is way off. If you want an accurate reading you have to use an expternal probe. For example, my Samsung 160GB SP1614N shows a temp of 60F... my case temp is ~85F and the room temp is around 76F. The...

WD FDB drives are still somehat unpredicatable.. really you'll find the same model numbers on drives with BB and FDB.. get a black one if you can.

    Quietest HD for HTPC

Anything not FDB is out.. so that 5400 rm samsung is probably gone. the 180gxp and the 7k250 are out because of the recalibration noise (can be resolved on 7k250)... a laptop drive is a good choice(although some seem to have a high pitched noise), or a DM+9, or a Samsung p80.

    News: XP SP2 is out

i updated my 3 machines on the weekend. No problems except for I tried to use the firewall and ran into problems so I went back to a firewall -less network. There's also a patch to help fix the TCP connections limit that SP2 imposed, I ran that patch on my box that does file sharing.

    RAID 0 again

My personal opinion, if you want an optical drive in that ss40 case, You can have 1 3.5" hard drive and possibly a laptop or slim line drive. If you removed the optical drive you could probably have 2 7200rpm drives.

    RAID 0 again

This is the most practical solution. the addition of a PCI card will negate any benefit of the S-ATA cables in the shuttle anyway. Good luck with 2 hard drives, I find even 1 hard drive gets rather warm in the shuttle's I have. (Seagate ATA IV idles in mid 40's while Maxtor DM+9 idles near...

    SATA-2

liam, S-ATA II is not S-ATA 2.0 S-ATA II is a set of optional extensions to S-ATA 1.0 it includes features like staggered spin up, NCQ/1st party DMA, specs for using backplanes, and a few more extra bits of icing. It has nothing to do with speed. There is a mention of this information with a...

WD SATA issue (maybe). Just a heads up

i think more of the problem is just cruddy drivers from manufacturers. the winNT installer has no problem with SCSI or ATA controllers that need a driver. S-ATA is no different, or atleast it shouldn't be.

    Mobile A64 Motherboard compatibility?

The way that last one fits on there you could certainly use the case fan to cool a low heat output CPU... this would decrease the number of fans in the system... but your case fan would probably need to be 80-92mm to be most effective. The reason I believe this is because a 120mm fan is not...

    Mobile A64 Motherboard compatibility?

My SiS based Asrock boards allow me to change the FSB on my athlonXP CPUs from 50MHz to ~250MHz (effectivley 100MHz to 500MHZ) I find this very interesting because the athlon chip was never designed for anything lower than 100MHz DDR (200MHz effective) FSB.
