btw, all of our dells have come with RAM in a dual channel config and 865 chipsets...even our celeron. Pretty nice when they could have used 845 chipsets and/or single channel configs

All 4 that I have looked at used Micron Technology branded pc2700 RAM. Looked exactly like RAM you'd buy from crucial. I don't remember seeing any crucial name on it though, just micron. I didn't look at the chips or PCB, but with a micron sticker I'd assume it was micron RAM.

WD FDB drives are still somehat unpredicatable.. really you'll find the same model numbers on drives with BB and FDB.. get a black one if you can.

Anything not FDB is out.. so that 5400 rm samsung is probably gone. the 180gxp and the 7k250 are out because of the recalibration noise (can be resolved on 7k250)... a laptop drive is a good choice(although some seem to have a high pitched noise), or a DM+9, or a Samsung p80.

My personal opinion, if you want an optical drive in that ss40 case, You can have 1 3.5" hard drive and possibly a laptop or slim line drive. If you removed the optical drive you could probably have 2 7200rpm drives.

i think more of the problem is just cruddy drivers from manufacturers. the winNT installer has no problem with SCSI or ATA controllers that need a driver. S-ATA is no different, or atleast it shouldn't be.

i've never encountered any problem's with promise controllers besides a little choppyness compared to the onboard IDE on some systems. I would personally, really like a SiS or Intel S-ATA controller, too bad I haven't seen any for sale.
