    GIGe ethernet and Abit

Yeah, i tried to do some hdparm tuning on my fedora file server.... and I found out I was already at optimal speeds... I can increase the speed from cache about 50MB/sec, but actual disk speed doesnt change more than a few hundered KB/sec at most.

    Building a Storage Server Thread

i like the intro as well... what about some of the devices mentioned on SR a few days ago (appliance NAS devices for the masses by D-link, NetDisk, and a few others)? For 80-160GB they are somewhat compelling.... for more storage you'll need a real file server. I think it would be fine to...

    making a router

Never heard of it, I am pretty impressed with most of the floppy distros. I am using coyote linux on a 486 at my parent's house so they have some sorf of protection (they only use 1 computer). Just looking on sourceforge there are alot of these linux/BSD based firewalls around...

HEy, I was looking for free software firewalls when I ran across this little dandy.. NetBOZ It's a FreeBSD based router/firewall similar to smoothwall and coyote linux. The web based interface looks interesting enough... some of the more interesting features include not just a DHCP server...

LA County bans use of "Master/Slave" in publicatio

The terms master and slave really are flawed for HDD use anyway. Since they have the connotation of one controlling the other when, in fact, neither control the operation of eachother and are instead controlled by (you guessed it) a controller. wait! is that PC? Henceforth the word...

    New PCI slots (3G10)

I think that post trys to confuse a little bit by listing the bandwidth per pin of AGP, PCI, etc and then giving the full bandwidth (of all pins) in the x16 and x1 slots.... but it looks like PCI express will be a big benefit over PCI for any high end computer (I still think that PCI+AGP is...

Teaching a *consumer* video editing class

That's true, you should think of DIVX and MPEG in general as a "destination" format... that is, you work with a lossless(or atleast a high quality) format and then when you're ready to publish the results you export them to a lower file size format like mpg. The same thing is used in image...

I'm starting to think this is kinda ridiculous.

With a heatsink so large I dont see why that couldnt be run passively in a case with decent airflow. I sure wouldn't buy that monster.. I think I'll wait a few generations (till Doom III and HL2 is released) and get a faster, quieter card that only occupies a single expansion slot.

    Random Hard Drive Shutdowns

Usually when a drive cant read a sector it will park and unpark (may or may not spin down). So your noticing of the bad sectors plus the spinup/down noise in assosiation with the freezing is a good sign this is a bad drive. The fact that your computer freezes might be partially controller...

by web does he mean HTTP only? or will there be some type of backend like a database? dynamic or static content? Teaching a *consumer* video editing class

I think the main problem is it is an average of 255kbps for the video. With that size and framerate the optimum (file size to quality) bitrate would be ~500kbps The formula I use is the bitrate /(height*width*fps) = ~ 0.2 So, for example: 500000/(320x240x30) = 0.217 The higher the answer...
