    Car RANT

I'm a fan of Toyota, but have been apalled at how they've handled some problems. There's the well known design problem with V6 engines of the late 90's / early 2000's where the engine would die at 30k miles, be under warranty and they would refuse to fix it, claiming user negligence (oil...

Computer Locks During Video Intensive Stuff

I know you said all fans are working, but could heat still be the issue? The total heat put out by the CPU + MB + video card + drives might make it borderline stable, but anything that taxes the system a bit might be raising the heat just past the threshhold. What are the temps in the case? Is...

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

Since 'tis the season to tell, so will I. About the Canon SD600 and A620. The SD600 takes fab pics for its size. Downsides: flash is weak; red-eye is a problem. Both are inherent traits of a small camera. It's a great choice for a shirt-pocket camera. The A620 is superb. Very happy with it's...

I don't know, Merc. I bought my Sony DVR in early 2003, and it has worked flawlessly for the purpose. Olympus has a very good name in DVRs; maybe you should take a thorough look at them since you feel strongly about Sony.

AFAIK, there are only 2 ways businesses end up with the new OS: 1) They need to run a piece of sw that requires the new OS - an unlikely scenario 2) They are buying new machines anyway, which come with the new OS In the case of #2, in many instances, the end-user company will specifically ask...

Merc: Buy a Sony (!!) or Olympus Digital recorder with a mini usb connection. You'll be able to transfer the audio to a PC and edit / burn it. I have a Sony that has worked really well for this purpose. But: buy a compatible external mic for it, attach it to your shirt collar (I use my lower...

Yikes, Tannin, I'd forgotten about support! Though I'm not in business, I have supported several "friends & family" and it hasn't been too much of a problem so far, though it hasn't been fun either. Vista will make that exponentially worse, and I have no desire to educate myself on its...

How to tell which type of key I have for XP Pro?

M$ has been tightening the noose a little bit at a time, over a pretty long period of time, the latest manifestation of which is the WGA crap. Would your copy of Dell's XP be an older one? Though you say "restore CD won't run on it", you say "the key won't work", so I presume installation is going through till you hit the point where the key is requested. Here's what I know. Soon after all this activation crap started, MS wanted a way to control re-installs and reactivations...

System Commander or Boot Magic (provided along with Partition magic) can do the job. Both will present a menu on boot that lets you pick the OS/partition you want to boot. The menu selections can be password protected and can default to a selection after a time out, both of which you can set...
