    Mobile Phone choices

I confess that the idea of a mobile phone locking up is foreign to me. When did they get so complicated that they can not just work? Whatever: I don't know what brand mine is (I could look, but that's the point - I'd have to look) nor how old it is: sometime early this century, I think. It has...

Guys, guys, let's get real, huh? Tea drinks everything. Hell, if I didn't wear runners all the time I'd have to lock the boot polish up.

    Card reader trouble & recommendations

Merc, how does that square with cable length restrictions though? OK, we don't have speed of light issues with multiple stacked hubs (i.e., not the same thing as ethernet cable length restrictions) but I'm talking about generalised signal quality loss - my all-purpose rule-of-thumb is that every...

Off the top of my head, you'd be fairly restricted with daisy chaining - there are certainly cable length restrictions which vary for different sorts of devices, so you'd think daisy chaining would be problematic.

Thankyou gentlemen, a Sandisk Micromate it is then. I couldn't find anywhere in Australia with them in stock, except for one place in Sydney with a bundle of 4GB Sandisk SD card and reader for $88. I don't really need another 4GB SD. Shrug .... ordered it anyway. It will be interesting to see...

    Card reader trouble & recommendations

One of my new cameras has an SD card as well as a proper CF card. I don't use the SD slot much (CF is so much nicer to handle) but I keep an 8GB SD card in there for emergencies (such as running out of space on my CF cards). I have now been through THREE different USB card readers and none of...

    Is Photoshop CS3 worth the add'l $

Just so. I agree entirely. But I'll add one more thing, which is, when you think about it, the worst thing about Adobe: this is their determination to see to it that no competitive product ever threatens their monopoly. (What evidence do I have that there is some sort of Adobe conspiracy to...

    Is Photoshop CS3 worth the add'l $

CS3 all the way. Absolute no-brainer. The smart objects feature alone is probably worth the money for many people. Ever do something, then do some other thing, then realise you did the wrong amount or the wrong sort of something A? With CS3, you can go back and change action A without having...

OK, OK, it's Friday. Cut me a little slack, Hairy One. Talking about the 40D, Mubs. The 1D III has significantly better ergonomics - for example, the asinine backwards shutter/aperture controls can be easily fixed via a single custom function; ISO is in the normal place (same as 20D, 30D, 5D, and 1Ds III). Also, it's big enough not to be cramped/...

Mine seems pretty nice. Haven't used it much yet - still trying to get my mind around the 1D III - but so far so good. Pluses: * Much quiter shutter - heaps better. * Dust shaker * Better viewfinder * Some further improvement to the control layout * More ISOs to choose from, finer range of...

Compaq are still selling new machines with Vista pre-loaded and 512MB of RAM! The one I saw today also had on-board video robbing another 128MB out of the measly 512MB it started with. And then they pre-install Norton Anti-virus. Adds a whole new world of meaning to the word "pain". Absolute...

    Terrapass

It had actually never occured to me to count the carbon in leaves. The appropriate way to measure trees use of carbon is to look at the amount secreted in the trunk and the roots. These are long-term things: that carbon won't return to the atmosphere for hundreds of years - indeed, assuming...

Depends on the lens, Stereodude. No-one uses them as actual filters, at least no-one that I've ever heard of, but they continue to have a useful role as lens protectors, depending on the particular lens, and on the way that lens is used. I shoot exclusively outdoors, in the bush, carrying a...
