    CNet rides again

Oh, and while it was good to point out the ATA133 interface is to all intents and purposes no faster than ATA100, I think they kind of missed the main point about it, no?

Yeah, me too. I'm waiting for Jake to say it's okay to start arranging a time. I think the new baby is keeping him a tad busy! Merc, Pradeep and I met in Sydney airport - I was coming back from Tokyo and he was going to NZ. I bought him a couple of sticks of Nanya 256MB registered CAS2 RAM back...

    Quiet PCL laser printer recommendations

I might be too late, but I'll also throw in a positive vote for the Brother low end printers. I wasn't a Brother fan - they used to be good, but went downhill bigtime for a number of years - but these printers have singlehandedly restored my faith in the brand. That's saying something.

    Getting games past a firewall

That's not stateful packet inspection, that's NAT (network address translation). Stateful means that the firewall actually inspects the payload of incoming and outgoing packets to make sure that they're legitimate. It also looks at a packet stream in its entirety rather than considering packets...

What do we all look like

Indeed, that was how my photo was taken. I'm not a fan of photos of myself either, and I have done a pretty good job throughout my life at avoiding 'em. On occasion though, like this one, I think it's only polite to post a picture of myself, despite my usual reservations. I just won't ever...

    WorldCom hits the dirt

It's all good for the rest of the global data market - which at this stage seems to consist of basically C&W and Equant, that's it. Then come the strong regional players - BT Ignite in Europe, AT&T in the US, and PCCW/Telstra/Reach and Singtel in Asia. Whether Worldcom pulls itself out of the...

Ah Tony, you're older than me and still much less cynical. I'm glad, keep it up. I'm afraid I'm now more a "rip the bandaid off" type than the "slow removal" type. RHCE Certification

Darn, lost a post. Quick summary : Hardware cost is a relatively small component of overall software project cost. The last software build team I ran had a capex budget of $40M; I only spent $7-8M of that on hardware. Things like SAP rollouts, even more so. I believe that Sun will continue to...

JoJo, It depends what part of the marketplace you're aiming at. Where I work we don't really even deal with companies unless they have more than ~USD20M a year to spend on their network with us, so my view is biased in that direction. These sorts of companies are only going to consider Solaris...

JoJo, I think you need to decide if you want to do courses for fun or profit. If it's the former, then by all means do the RedHat course. If it's for profit, your list would look quite different. As Merc says, it would include things like Solaris Administrator (which actually would help you...

Best opening scene for an action movie?

The opening to "Raiders" is pretty good, it certainly sets the scene for the rest of the movie. I've always loved "Blade Runner," particularly the Director's Cut. Why buy the cow when everyone's willing to give the milk to you for less than it cost them to make? Transoceanic cable will be required for a long time to come. Modern undersea cables carry up to 7.5Tb/s, the maximum wireless speed is 54Mb/s for local area networks, or up to 1Gb/s for short...

Best opening scene for an action movie?

Merc, happy to sell you what you're asking for - I don't have prices for faster than OC48 though. The local loop charge alone is quite respectable. :) I don't see much point in C&W buying up startups in Silicon Valley - I reckon they have most of the bits they need to execute their strategy...

The latter. I'm also mulling an opportunity at a rival telco to become a global account director in Melbourne. Normally I wouldn't consider it, but the account turns over $54M/year and has good potential for growth. But then again, it'd be a pain to uproot us from Sydney.

    WorldCom hits the dirt

It used to be much more. Until we bought Exodus, the investors got a special dividend and C&W did a 1.5bn pound share buyback the net cash position was over 7bn pounds (~$11bn). Holding cash is a pretty good strategy at the moment, I think, given the instability in telecoms at the moment. It...

By whom? No one has stepped up to the plate to buy Global Crossing. No one has offered to buy Williams. No one's making noises about buying Worldcom's carcass. Telcos don't have any money, let alone around the $7.2bn to cover C&W's market cap + a sale premium (usually about 50-100%) =...
