That certainly explains why DB is on the floor much of the time. What is more slippery, Tea's discarded banana peels or her, uh, accidents? (Actually, I imagine Tea pretty much like the Librarian in Terry Pratchett's books.)

    Small hosting services

You're welcome to use my web space - I think it's 10MB of storage and 100MB of traffic. Minus side is obviously it's here in Australia. The other minus point is that I expect to change providers within the next couple of months.

Yes, I was perhaps wrongly assuming that Merc with all his ISP accounts might have some free web space knocking around as a result. Zoneedit then gets you past the issue of how to tidily point your domain name to your ISP web space.

Zoneedit.com. Free management of your domain/DNS stuff. And you can point www.whatever.com to www.yourisp.com/~user as well. Did I mention it was free? :)

    The Giver revealed...

I'm with Merc on this one, although I don't even use a nickname on these forums. By taking this conversation into the realm of parents and children, that's an area I'm not personally qualified to talk about because I haven't thought about how I would raise any children I might have. The way my...

Yes, now that Nero has posted a methodology to do it. You certainly don't see Roxio or Adaptec giving you any assistance. :(

It's not just being in Australia that qualifies you for a good deal - aparently you also need to respond in less than 9 minutes. :excl:

The things I loved when I was kid...

Lego definitely! The way that there's a time around sunset when you feel like you can run forever without getting tired. Playing hide and seek. Sitting on top of a heating vent when it was really cold outside, reading. Building trenches and dams in the earth, then running water through the...

    The Giver revealed...

The other thought I had is that by taking on another persona to argue with people, you were allowing yourself to criticise and insult others while insulating yourself from any possible backlash. In other words, you're abdicating some of the responsibility for your own opinions and the expression...

I don't mind it coming from a friend. I'd object to a friend of mine lumping all of my countrymen in indiscriminately with me though - it seems unfair on both my countrymen and I. :)

    Benchmarking....Again

Actually, I'm very interested in this topic at the moment for selfish reasons - sorting out the optical reviewing methodology at SR. At the moment I've tested a couple of drives using Tim's methodology -yes, I now have the infamous High Heat Baseball 2000 CD in my possession, ph33r me! - and...

Storage Forum 101: how to make sense of this madhouse

It's funny to see other people's view of you. My area of expertise is really the business analysis and then managing the design and build of large scale Internet-connected IT systems - I've had about eight years experience of doing that. This telco thing is really only a sideline for the last...

JKKJ, Which North Shore in Canada? Pretty much everywhere I know there that has a northern shore has such a place name, either formally or informally. I lived in Nova Scotia for six years (I'm going back there for a visit at the end of this month) and there was a North Shore there too. It's...

Hitachi Buys IBM Hard-Drives for $2 Billion

I think the idea of LEO satellites, airships etc. has been largely passed by with the availability of cheap fibre. It's not necessarily plentiful in every area of the US at the moment - Boston is particularly a problem, for example (AT&T took over 12 months to fill our order). Eventually this...

    D-Link DI-804 DHCP Problem

Sounds like a connectivity problem rather than a problem with the DLink. Check the card and the cable on the other computer. Make sure it's set up to get its IP addresses automatically. Test that the DLink is actually giving out addresses - go to a DOS window and type ipconfig /release then...

    Networking problem

QoS would need something to tag the packets with QoS information. The service on the PC side is only a QoS tag reader, not a writer. Yes, I need more info on your setup. Are the two cards connected into the same network, same IP block (or what are you using for transport)? You may be able to...

Indeed. It would be quite good to have someone in North America actually, because I'm having some difficulty getting review product out of some suppliers locally. I also trust you to accurately report the numbers, which is the other important bit. The testbed I'm using isn't very advanced -...

Hitachi Buys IBM Hard-Drives for $2 Billion

I'd be surprised if Microsoft bought Worldcom, although MS does have a history of making some really stupid decisions. First of all, Worldcom is even today expensive for what you get. Secondly, they don't have a "big ass world-wide backbone," they have a big ass US backbone and then a bunch of...

Fair enough. But you read too much into what I said - I'm always open to hearing the views of people on both sides of an argument - hell, after 3 years on SR as of next month I think you have plenty of evidence of that! It's true that my view was coloured by the media in Eastern Canada - they...

I too was in Canada for the referendum. It was a pretty close run thing, but I completely agree that it showed that at least half the people in Quebec don't want to leave Canada. I'm afraid I don't see how Quebec would survive financially as a nation without assistance - particularly once the...

What should I do with this POS?

Just as unique as describing the onboard graphics as "Integrated AGP 4X VGA for vivid 3D graphics and video performance" - presumably vivid 3D graphics because you get a good long time to look at each frame. Note too it doesn't say what kind of video performance you get - there's a noun missing...

    Holy Smoking RAM!

Yup. I may have told this one before, apologies if so : Way back in my university days, I was a TA in the computer labs. A thesis student came to me and said the computer "wouldn't read the disk." I went round and had a look, and sure enough he'd sat down at a computer with only a 3.5" floppy...
