    Laptop hard drive bad?

Oh, and remind me to read posts more carefully before I reply to them. Should you run a utility to block off certain areas? My feeling is no: I'd ask the drive to do as little work as possible in this case, and not risk running any activity-intensive testing software on it until you have a...

    Laptop hard drive bad?

Seek errors are, in my experience, always very bad news. So far as frequent backing up goes until you can swap the drive out, I advise paranoia.

Where Are The Serial ATA Opticals?

You'd think so, Sechs. People buy SATA hard drives after all, and they cost more. So what's holding the manufacturers up? OK, the way I see it, there is no particular point in SATA for opticals, and I don't think more than ... oh ... about 5% of customers, maybe 10% would be willing to pay the...

Where Are The Serial ATA Opticals?

My initial thought was a simple "who cares?" But then, a moment later, I thought that in fact secondary drives are the best application for SATA at present (because then there is rarely any sort of installation-related driver problem) so an optical drive, which is always a secondary unit and...

    Aggravation building new computer

All I can say is good luck! The basic idea with Windows 98 and ASUS boards is that if you buggerise around ringing changes with the plug & play system for long enough, eventually you will break down its resistance and, having run out of nasty tricks to pull, it will give up and just work. Once...

    Aggravation building new computer

PS: Nvidia 1st and 2nd generation motherboard chipsets were, bluntly, crapsville. Only with the Nforce 3 did Nvidia get their minds around making a chipset that just works. Experiment with different drivers if you can find any - but note that Nvidia's mainboard chipset support for Windows 98 is...

    Aggravation building new computer

You have a classic case of resource management hell, JTR. ASUS motherboards are renowned for it, and running Windows 98 just fans the flames. Reset everything to the BIOS defaults. Move your PCI cards around into different slots. As a rule of thumb, avoid slot 1 and (if possible) slots 4 and...

China: Marxist Idealogy vs. Market Reality

Hmmm ... sounds like we are going to get a whole new version of alleged Marx which will, if I am any guess, bear little relation to the version of alleged Marx published by the Maoists in the past, and still less to what the great scholar actually wrote. Sometimes - well, often actually - I...

Despite my little joke with Coug just above, I very rarely use them, Tim, so a global disable wouldn't upset me. I wouldn't actually vote for it, as my eye filters them out quite effectively (the still ones at least), but it wouldn't bother me either way.

Task power supplies are middle of the road: not first class, top dollar units, but generally solid, reliable performers at a reasonable price. Certainly not cheap junk. Just the same, the latest generation CPUs can draw a heap, so swapping it out for a known good one might tell you quite a lot.

Wikipedia is wong. In Australia, wood is normally sold by the metre — that's a cubic metre, of course, which is approximately equal to the amount of wood that will fit in a cube 700mm on each side, if you pack it using as much air as you can. Stack it tight and you wind up with less again.

Try removing everything that seems to have anything at all to do with video driver software, and reinstalling from scratch. (If you haven't already done this.) ATI drivers are horrible.
