Looking at the benches I decided to skip team red this time around. Maybe on their next refresh we'll see them touting those "optimizations" but for now it looks like an i5-7600 (non-k -- I don't overclock, ever) is a good bet. The motherboard I picked out is cheaper than the AMD one I was going...

Drive doesn't fit. Well, it'll technically go into the port, but I can't close the bottom cover over the machine with the drive in. I'm sending it back for a refund. Here's a lesson learned for next time, caveat emptor indeed. The drive works as advertised when attached to my USB converter, I...

Things are still pretty tentative at the moment but I'm looking at finishing my gen ed requirements at a community college of some sort down there and finishing out my degree requirements probably at University of Central Florida. You've got it right. $10.50/hr, plus they pay my tuition which is why I was there in the first place. I can't afford to get fired or that aid will go away and I'll likely get kicked out of my dorm. That said, next semester should see things being a lot better for me. I'm planning a transfer...

Just to be sure I couldn't coax my old drive to work just long enough to recover my music from it (it'll be a pain to re-rip all those CDs, after all) I hooked it up to one of those cheap USB to SATA/IDE converters. Nothing I tried could get it working again, and I tried several other drives on...

Sprained my ankle Monday evening/Tuesday morning, and today my hard drive finally died. It gives me the dreaded click of death. Hangs up the BIOS on trying to detect it, even. This has not been my week.

I think I've found an interesting little distro that might just serve my needs perfectly, a Debian fork called Devuan. It offers quite a bit of choice as to the init systems you can use. It's still in beta but asking around in their IRC room tells me the only thing that has been broken in recent...

Flash Memory quality (USB sticks and microSD cards) [v. It all sucks?!?!?]

Hold that thought. Phone randomly stopped recognizing the SD card one night. Thinking it's kaput. Really don't want to have to return it, but I dropped forty bucks on it and that's not cheap for a guy like me.

Interesting. That isn't the behavior I noticed when I was running systemd, but it is interesting nonetheless. I haven't used it in a while so maybe this is some new thing? I've looked at both of them and find them a little lacking. I prefer the runit init system to pure BSD init scripts and...

Flash Memory quality (USB sticks and microSD cards) [v. It all sucks?!?!?]

My 128GB that I stuck in my phone does fine. It's no speed demon but the I/O is consistent at about 20MB/s going through my phone (it's formatted as part of the internal storage) for large files and I have had no errors yet -- although all I did so far was copy ~70GB of music to it (7.5 thousand...
