    James is officially OTH today!

Crap, I knew I shouldn't have entered my birthdate into the system. :) Thanks guys... I was trying to keep this a low profile one - my girlfriend is laughing at me (she's 33).

Is there a way to shut up Jason for a while?

I still reckon a polite e-mail is in order. I feel there's a world of difference between venting about personal problems and having an opinion (and then posting) on everything. Like I said elsewhere, at the moment any posting on SR effectively becomes a conversation with Jason.

MS - SMT means mo' money!

It takes seven years of secondary education to learn to speak and (mostly) write Japanese. That's why anime for children has some characters with little characters written above - for those that know the character, fine, but there's also help for those that don't know it yet. Apparently you...

Is there a way to shut up Jason for a while?

If Jason wants help with things, he should post to that effect (or e-mail someone). I don't see how cluttering up SR with news postings is theraputic.

Is there a way to shut up Jason for a while?

... of course, in order for me to e-mail him, I need a valid e-mail address. Anyone have one? I suspect he doesn't read jehh1234@hotmail.com.

That's quite the case, Coug. I don't know anything about it, I wonder what the blue stuff on the front is made of?

Is there a way to shut up Jason for a while?

I suggest some e-mails to him first, then a forum posting. It's the most polite way to proceed. I'll send him an e-mail now. Anyone else?

    www.neighborhoodcable.com.au - any good?

Telstra, iHUG and Austar offer satellite service. Telstra is only allowed to offer it in metropolitan areas. Austar is going broke. None of them are particularly fast (400K/s or less). DSL is a better deal if you can get it but it's still not cheap (~USD50/mo for 512/128 and 3GB).

    www.neighborhoodcable.com.au - any good?

People outside Australia don't appreciate how large the Pacific Ocean is. Stringing cables across it is monsterously expensive, plus US carriers charge us for traffic we send to them but don't credit us for traffic they send to us. Also, there only is one decent cable into Australia from the US...

    www.neighborhoodcable.com.au - any good?

I've heard good things about them too. In fact, I found out about them recently with a view to suggesting them a s a low-cost alternative for your shop's access pipe which you were talking about a few weeks ago. Seems you found them by yourself. :)

The Storage Forum FAQ: Discussion Thread.

I think it's a mighty fine piece of writing. The only thing I really have against it is its length! Tim, I'm not really decided on one side or the other of the "argument" - all I can do is rely on the experts. More thinking required, methinks.

    Epox vs Soltek

I have an ECS K7S5A with an Athlon 1GHz in it, it cost me all of the equivalent of A$130 retail in Japan about 4 months ago. I got one with the onboard audio and LAN, I deactivated the audio portion but I do use the LAN port. It has been rock solid, some silliness with the drivers for my CMedia...

Tim, Yeah, thanks. I think that Mickey is the closest thing to a "man on the inside" we have - my guess is he works for Seagate but feel free to have your own guess. I think the key thing is what he said in response to you : I'll have a stab at a combined response tomorrow. (Ugh, I'm so far...

Tim : http://forums.storagereview.net/viewtopic.php?t=1484 I should try to contact Mickey privately and see if it's okay to use a mixture of his and your response, what do you think?

    OT: Apology to China

Don't worry Tony. I laid into Picard over his stupid assertion that RAID0 gives its greatest performance benefit in a desktop situation - and that anyone who thinks differently doesn't know what they're talking about. It seems that my reply pretty much killed the thread ...

    Build a FAQ

Yes, that's true - although he also says that the new stuff, mostly to deal with high RPMs, goes into SCSI too. Mickey had a more definitive discussion of this point back in the old forum - alas, it is gone. Perhaps we could ask him his opinion directly?

    Build a FAQ

Hmmm, a controversial one to start (thanks!). My current thinking on this issue is heavily influenced by Mickey on SR, who says the build quality is essentially no different. http://forums.storagereview.net/viewtopic.php?p=7934&highlight=#7934 I suspect that the cache is optimised more for...

Need recommendation for a good cable/DSL switch + firewall.

Coug, yes it is too much to ask for at that price. :) I'm pretty sure that D-Link makes such a box, although looking at their web page I can't find it. Alcatel makes one : http://www.alcatel.com/consumer/dsl/pdf/datasheet510.pdf although theirs only has a 10Mb switch (or hub, I forget which)...

    60 users on-line?

I remember answering this - phooey, the most must have got lost! My response was, basically, no. Log files should live on /var, which in turn is usually a seperate partition for this very reason. Hence my worry that Burst's setup allows such a thing to even occur.

    Build a FAQ

I see it as being a web page, not a discussion area. It's not intended to pull traffic away from SR at all. Heck, they can host it if they like. My intention was to do most of the discussion here, given the participants here I feel that the discussion will be much more focussed and have less...

    Search Engines and Frames

I believe that the Google spider must identify itself as such in the User-Agent field of the HTTP request (this is important to maintain accurate site usage stats, so that search engine spiders aren't counted as visitors). If a page does a test and asks the spider what browser it is, it gets a...

    Build a FAQ

No, not a FAQ about the site - a FAQ covering some of the questions asked often in forums like this. Perhaps if people can contribute ideas and answers in this thread, then we can clear it all up and post it somewhere else, perhaps an HTML page posted on this site? I don't think a forum is the...

When / gets full on a Unix box, that's really, really bad. Time to investigate other hosts? There is probably an exit clause for non-provision of service. I don't know what is more of a concern - that Burst's setup allows someone to fill /, or that it is occuring...

    Congratulations to Australian Winter Olympians

I think it's our first Winter Olympics medal better than a bronze. :) Yes, it's a great achievement and all that, but it's not exactly what you'd call the best way to win an Olympic medal - although it sure beats having to bribe the judges to give you one, I guess.

    75/60 GXP PRoblems Exposed ???

They didn't really "prove" anything, did they? GMR has nothing to do with the failures, the technology is used by everyone and has been around for ages.
