    Shops that ship internationally

Newegg doesn't. Lots that come up in an Amazon search don't. FuturePowerPC does. Are they any good? What's inspired this is the grinding futility in trying to find components in Australia, let alone New Zealand. Or finding them, but having to pay 2 times as much as in the US. I was...

    Why ECC RAM?

It may surprise you to learn that there are different types of 'radiation'; lead is useful for X-rays and Gamma rays. You can bury your equipment, that's 100% effective. Conversely, the problem is many times worse in an airliner: Cosmic rays were recently suspected as a possible cause of a...

    Why ECC RAM?

No, most are stopped by the atmosphere. You're confusing them with neutrinos. The cosmic rays don't travel a kilometer through the ice, they're stopped when they collide with atoms in the ice and give off "fleeting flashes of blue light" - that's what the detectors underneath the ice are...

    USB 3.0 Cases

Sorry, I looked it up and misread it - it seemed wrong but I was tired. Even at 900mA, the load is still more than 5 ohms. I'd be confident that even little wires have considerably less than 1 ohm resistance with such small lengths, so still nothing to worry about.

Hitachi Data Systems to spin of storage division

An odd couple indeed. This is a marriage between a marketing machine and an engineering shop, with the marketers calling all the shots. Interesting point, Lunar. USB 3.0 only officially increases current by 50% to 150mA, so it should be fine. Even Gigabyte's presumed 300mA or more should be okay. CougTek: Yeah, I worried about that, but it's hard to get Ddrueding's attention. ;)

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

I ogled a Dell U2711 just the other day; it was pretty impressive. The U2410 next to it paled in comparison. Locally, you can get one for as little as $700. I really, really, really doubt that you can buy anything else anywhere near that good for that kind of money.

The specs claim it will take a cooler up to 167mm; the Atomic MPC article I linked says: "inside its mATX-compatible frame lies enough room for a 160mm-tall heatsink". Scythe lists the height of the Mugen-2 as 158mm. ;)

i.e. you were inadvertently trying to cast a SmallInt as a TinyInt. Out of curiosity, is the value 128 because it's part of a sequence for all possible poll options in the data? Cause on the face of it PhpBB is using a compound key of topic_id + poll_option_id instead. I guess it shouldn't...

BounceBack does this for you. The only snag is that it insists on partitioning the backup drive first, after which you can just resize the boot partition and use the rest for your data. I set this up and tested it on a PC with a 120GB SSD and a 2TB HDD. BounceBack does not require a working...

    Why ECC RAM?

For just the motherboard and part of the CPU, that sounds about right. :p You need a 5xxx chipset and they don't come cheap. The significance lies in the fact that you can't find any 8GB sticks that aren't registered. In practise, the ECC is a given once you walk down that (incompatible) path...

    Why ECC RAM?

So why can't you build a server with an AMD X6 on an Asus M4A88TD-M/USB3 or M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3? Six cores, 6MB L3 cache, five or six SATA 3 (6.0Gb/s) ports, USB3, 16GB of ECC RAM - all in a microATX form factor for not much more than $500. Maybe half the price of an equivalent Xeon s1156...

    Why ECC RAM?

    Why ECC RAM?

So in the Intel world, if you want any kind of error checking/correction at all, you need a Xeon. If you want something better than simple single-bit ECC, you need a first generation i-Core socket 1366 system. Socket 1155 and 1156 won't cut it, so tough if you want second generation. If you...

    Why must TV forsake me?

Given that no-one here has even mentioned it, I presume that Stargate Universe doesn't appeal to your tastes? For what it's worth, after a slow start, it's the best SciFi drama I've ever seen. I suspect the complicated SciFi backdrop stops it appealing to a wider audience.

    Why ECC RAM?

This is a serious question for thinking minds. :) We've all been raised on the principle that servers need error-checked RAM but client PCs don't. Eneloop Alternatives (or Cracking The Battery Lingo Codewords)

Well obviously they don't generate much heat with 500mA: 25mW in fact, if the battery is normal. But you're making it very difficult for the charger to detect the increase in the temperature delta and particularly the drop in the voltage delta. So your risk of overcharging at 0.25C is very...

Eneloop Alternatives (or Cracking The Battery Lingo Codewords)

Yes, that's where I was heading. C/6 is too slow for reliable -ΔV and probably even for Δtemp, and timers often rely on C/5, so I deduced Chewy must rely on trickle to finish the job. The trickle current in that style of charger is usually too high for maintenance charging, so you may have...

Eneloop Alternatives (or Cracking The Battery Lingo Codewords)

In a subtropical climate, self-discharge is probably running at 30% a month, so yes, Eneloops are still the ones to get. Movie Studios lose case against Australian ISP. Two courts down, one to go. I see that the studios went for straight entrapment while 'gathering evidence' against ISP customers. That is, they wanted action against people who took the 'stolen' stuff that the studio employees offered them.

    Prospective Semi-High-End Budget Build

If you're not going to install huge software like games, you should be able to make do with a 60GB SSD as your boot drive. Newegg has G.Skill for $118, Corsair and Patriot for $130 - all Sandforce drives. I just had a quick browse of the WCG-HCC forums. Given it's one of the few things that...

    Something Random

The review you linked says the GT440 pulled 81W at default clockspeed (like I said, +3% over NVidia standard). As I also said, I question their assumptions in arriving at that figure. I think it's far more likely that power consumption is only passing 75W when overclocked to the limit. Even...

Not unless you include the default 3% overclock that Asus likes to give their stuff so it wins fanboy comparisons. :p But seriously, I reread the review and realized that their assumptions were dubious. I briefly became enthusiastic about Stereodude's GT440 - until I realized it cost more to buy and used more power than the AMD equivalent (HD5570-HD5670?). In fact, one review managed to push it past the PCI-e power limit with Furmark. On top of that, it's unclear whether you're buying a the...
