A copule of the high-end Nikon DSLRs have an optional 802.11b attachment that you can use to automatically upload the pics taken to either your computer or an FTP server etc. I imagine the functionality will dribble down eventually.

Backups? SATA or ide? or Firewire?

Newegg have the NEC 2510a in stock for $93 shipped. It's a DL writer. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-023&depa=0 There has been a bunch of 12x-16x burners announced at Computex over the last few days. However they all write at 2.4x to +R DL, so I think the NEC...

Backups? SATA or ide? or Firewire?

FW800 is complete overkill for a DVD burner. Even talking about soon to be 16x DVD burn speeds, at around 15MB/sec, FW400 is more than capable. For HDDs, there is a slight performance increase with FW800, but until the next gen of IDE drives with greater transfer rates is released, I wouldn't...

Moving to full-time with benefits next week :) No need to hear me bitch about cost of medical insurance in the US anymore, as it's fully paid for. For celebratory purposes I will be having margaritas in a bag, apparently made famous by a marine in a parachute. Ah yes, Captain Blender.

Need a TV - help please

HDTV is a no-go at $400. I would say go to CC/BB and have a look at their range. Flat-screen is nice to avoid too many reflections/distortions. Perhaps a measuring tape to be sure that it will fit the entertainment center. Tivo/Replay is great, once you've tasted it there's no going back.

I have a secondhand Lexmark OptraS 1625, got it on eBay for around $150 shipped. I think the page count was around the 80,000 mark. Has duplexer, integrated 10/100. 1200 true dpi, PS etc. Only downside is the toner carts, fortunately I got a 7000 page count cart from JamesW for a fantastic...

I've changed my mind : I'm for carrying guns...

I've changed my mind : I'm for carrying guns...

OK, let us assume that in Australia, there were for example 5 million gun owners. There were also 500,000 criminals who possesed guns (whether stolen, manufactured in a workshop, etc). The government then banned all guns from private ownership. 5 million law-abiding citizens handed their guns in...

We don't know yet. We have sent some images with the artifacts to Canon I believe. We may be getting close to the rated shutter life, but even with a dodgy shutter we shouldn't be getting the green banding we experienced. In any case we got another 1Ds today, when we convert to grayscale the...

Indeed in the short term I think it was a good thing. Especially since it was a pickup and could only seat three. However I think my next vehicle will certainly have a big V8 in it, there are now lots of cars/trucks with the 350 Hemi in it via the Chrysler/Dodge/soon to be Jeep brands. The Dodge...

Yup if the price of petrol in the US went up to $5 per gallon overnight there would be panic in the streets. Thankfully there isn't so much regressive taxation on petrol in the US like there is in Europe, and to a lesser extent Aus. Assuming a thirsty SUV getting 13MPG, people would be looking...

Criminals commit crimes, whether they have a gun or not. I've never opened up a gun case and suddenly the gun whispered to me *hey man, wanna rob a bank today*. There are people out there who can/do kill with their bare hands. The most dangerous weapon of all is the human mind. Would fewer guns...

Well having seen the price of medical insurance in the US, Australia is definitely free by comparison. If my wife didn't get most of it paid by her employer, coverage for a family of four would cost us over US$600 per month. A reasonable morgage payment. That's still with a co-pay on...

John Lott's work has held up fantastically well compared to the fraud that has been exposed from the like of "Dr" Kellerman etc. If you believe there can be no causal link between more guns and less crime, then you can't have it both ways and then argue that there is a link between less guns and...

I don't know about Canada, but at least in the UK the rate of violent crime (non gun-related) is actually higher than the US. The rates for home invasions, assault etc is higher there, in the safe "gun-free" utopia many would try and advocate for the US. Cartridge-firing handguns have been...

Actually I believe the stats show that states that have introduced concealed carry have shown a marked drop in violent crime. More guns, less crime. www.pair.com You pay a premium, but it's worth it. However it's not so good if you run DBs, say for hosting a forum such as this one. They have limits on the DB sizes etc on their smaller plans, however this does help to keep the script kiddies from taking the server down every day :)

Stupid question of the day Firewire

If your CardBus card doesn't work with any device, then it's either the cable or the CardBus card that's buggered. If the external FW drive does work, then it's your configuration of FW networking that's probably at fault.

[NEWZ] Intel Going Entirely Dual Core In 2005

[NEWZ] Intel Going Entirely Dual Core In 2005

In your case, you couldn't have chosen Tyan as I don't believe they make the K8W (workstation board with AGP) with built-in SCSI as an option. And the K8S with SCSI doesn't have AGP. But given that most have 4 port SATA RAID, and imminent arrival of SAS, I don't think I would want built-in SCSI...

I've been running dual XP1700s on a TigerMP for a couple of years now. Combined with 15K SCSI drives performance is snappy. Actually I haven't turned mine on in a month or so, been having stability problems. For dual Opteron with AGP then a Tyan K8W or whatever should fit the bill just fine...

Stupid question of the day Firewire

Most PC laptops only have unpowered (4-pin) FW ports. So they can't be used to power bus-powered FW devices (mostly 2.5" HDD in enclosures, FW CF readers, iBot webcams etc.) You would need to use the device's AC power adaptor, if available. Or there are some rare FW PC Cards that you can plug a...
