    HDTV Cards

That's true. In fact the my-HD and most other tuner cards don't have component inputs to record from a digital cable box anyway. For timeshifting HD, you really need a D-VHS deck, or one of the HD-PVRs that either the cable or dish companies provide. Of course with the latter options, you are...

    What about Howard Dean?

If people are too dim to be able to read English (and Spanish I'm sure) instructions and only punch one hole then they don't deserve the right to vote.

    HDTV Cards

I just ordered a MyHD MDP-120. I was thinking of getting a second ReplayTV, but then again my only signal source is OTA, and I have pretty crappy reception. So I thought I might as well try for HD reception, and be able to capture to the computer. I discounted the AccessDTV card because...

    SMC 8505T GIGe switch

I had a Nortel 24 port 10/100 switch, rack mountable with three of those cursed 40mm fans. Annoyingly loud. I now have a Dell with no fans.

    HDTV Cards

Are you sure about the HDTV AIW? I know they have the component out dongle, but a quick Google revealed nothing of one that can tune HDTV. Would be a sweet card. Apparently the DVICO cards do have some driver issues but they are a continous work in progress.

Onboard vs. PCI sound and LAN

The point is that in the 44->48->44 conversion, you are losing quality/introducing artifacts. If AC97 just left the bloody 44 alone, there wouldn't be any loss.

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

I believe each monitor is limited to 1280*1024 max rez when running Parhelia tri-head. And you can't do three DVI, I believe it's two DVI one analog, or perhaps two analog and one DVI, I can't remember. Think it's the latter.

    5.1 vs 4.1 speakers

I believe if you have a pair of front stereo speakers with excellent imaging, and sit exactly in the same position, right in the center of them, then a center speaker could be done away with. Es[ecially if you are a foot away from the computer screen/speakers. But if you are slightly off-axis...

64-Bit WinXP Beta Available to General Public

Yeah the Intel 1000BT Server chipset in my Dull 400SC used PRONo something as the management tool exe. When I first saw it listed in Task Manager I thought I was infected with some dirty virus/trojan. Imagine my surprise when it went away after I closed the Proset utility :)

    2004 Superbowl predicition!

That's what a ReplayTV/Tivo is for. It's usually right around 30 secs between plays, so as soon as one down is finished, hit the 30sec skip and away you go right into the action again. And you can skip past all the half time crap as a bonus :)

Bowled Over By Cereal Attached SCSI

PCI-X 133MHz slots (not to be confused with forthcoming PCI-Express) are good for a theoretical 1GB/sec. Opterons have plenty of headroom yet, I would anticipate them moving up to 3GHz at least.

    DVD burning software

Obviously you are going to get a higher quality sound from two speakers worth a combined say $1000, as opposed to 6 speakers and a sub-woofer for a combined $1000. And there is a three dimensionality achievable with two speakers in stereo. But that dimensionality I have found is very dependent...
