In some cases like say a laptop you wouldn't want to add the power brick size and weight to the device, can definately see the need there.

On my laptop there is a power saving function that disables the gigabit port when you are not using the laptop and requires that there be a management app installed to turn it on all the time. Try plugging it in and shutting down then powering on the computer with the ethernet plugged in.

I primarily use Spybot and Adaware too. I checked out the microsoft one for a little while but it just didn't seem to find anything that addaware/spybot didn't already find.

Having a fixed platform is a big plus for software development, they won't have to cover as much ground. I don't see apple getting out of the whole box attitude and going to being an OS suplier only, which is what would happen if they released an OS that anyone could use on a PC.
