That thing is a little bit better than twice as fast as the 128GB Patriot thumb drive I have here for both reads and writes. Definitely nothing to complain about.

Having redundancy is important. Having a specific RAID level is decidedly less so. Parity calculations will kill your IO performance.

No one is answering that because there is no hard answer. The answer will most definitely be lower for disks in RAID5 or 6 than 10, though.

Synology doesn't have any special magic to make its bits go faster than Gigabit Ethernet line speed. If you're going to be hosting multiple VMs over one, you'll really need to pay attention to the underlying disk configuration. You'll need to look at a RAID1 or RAID10 setup to have any kind of...

    HP Probook

The argument for the Probook is that they're cheap compared to other business-class notebooks. I love Thinkpads but Lenovo doesn't offer anything as cheap as a $390 Probook (though this one was not THAT cheap). That, and the most common low-cost Thinkpad, the Edge, is really more of a glorified...

And the big winner for thing that was fucking up start times? HP Protection Suite, which appears to be some crap that was licensed from our good friends at McAffee. As if I needed more evidence that nothing from McAffee should ever be tolerated on a computer.

    Help to chose NAS... Please

Synology gives you a whole bunch of neat addons and toys but the little four and six drive ones I've set up don't really scream "expansion" to me. I've fed ESXi with a FreeNAS and found the performance kind of weak over just plain Gbe, but there are better folks here for talking about that...

    HP Probook

So I'm sitting here right now with an HP Probook 4430s. It's an i5 with 8GB RAM... and it takes a little over three minutes to get to a desktop and probably another three after that before the hourglass goes away. Needless to say this requires some investigation. Anyone else see a problem with...

3.5" hard disks were universally more reliable than any 5.25" disks that were ever made. It's been my experience that 2.5" disks are more reliable than 3.5" models, even when they're normally used in portable applications. I wonder what impact the smaller components has on reliability over and...

We're just going to have to face the fact that modern drives are going to be shit. The only real good news is that they're generally so cheap (or will be again some day) that we can afford to buy more of them and still have incredibly dense storage systems. For what it's worth, I've had very...
