Minimum power setup to go in Server case

Torrents are still around. They're just less open and more specialized in their content. There are also Newsgroups full of awesome stuff. But you're right that you are not a person who needs some monster Xeon rig.

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

Walmart is offering the Kindle Fire for $200 with a $50 gift card this week. Which is a pretty good deal if you already buy groceries and stuff there. It's kind of a toss-up between the two. The Nook Color is really heavy (almost 1lb.) for a 7" tablet, and it only has a single core CPU. But the...

Minimum power setup to go in Server case

I'm still at a bit of loss as to the actual definition of "server case." But since this is Santilli's thread I'll put forward that decommissioned quad core Opterons or Core2-based Xeons or even (if you feel inclined to be exotic) Itanium systems are ridiculously cheap and readily available out...

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

Tablet-y deal of the day: Overstock.com is selling refurbished Nook Colors for $130. The Nook Color has a slightly off-kilter Android build on it. Most of the on-device storage is reserved for ebooks with only 2GB available for non-book data and the default app selection is pretty lame. But it...

Can I just say right now that I hate Seagate's RMA system with the passion of a million exploding stars? The web based tool refuses to create RMAs for me because my postal code is shared by several municipalities, so I have to spend a half hour on the phone and then get lectured by the phone...

I'm still trying to figure out what your issue is. You have users hitting IMAP servers with several different client programs and they aren't behaving in anything like a uniform fashion? On a desktop client you should at least be able to create rules or filters to move mail where you think it...

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

Android users put out. But iphone users get laid more often. Before you completely dismiss that, the people who run OKCupid are enormous statistics geeks. OKCupid actually runs on a custom web server that exists to collect and ferret out and quantify information about its users. That's one of...

I can state with absolute certainty that it's possible to have a decent RDP experience over a sub-28.8kpbs dialup connection, because I used to have to do that. In theory, it's pretty trivial to move databases, especially those built with Microsoft tools in the first place, into MSSQL and some sort of asp.net front end. I've seen those sorts of things developed very quickly. I'd like to lobby for more use of Google Docs et al but realistically...

    Vista Problems ? ?

Application and device compatibility were god-awful. A lot of it was eventually addressed, but for example there are an awful lot of Inkjet printers that flat out couldn't be made to work with Vista, especially the 64-bit version. On top of that, a LOT of Vista systems, especially notebooks...

I just ran across an interesting application for somebody who lives and dies for "push to talk." It's called Heytell and it's an Android/iPhone thing. It's not quite the same thing as Nextel's deal, more like voice text messages, but it's free and looks really easy to use.

    question Which Tablets

Something I've found that I like about the 10" tablet over and above the smaller ones: It's a good adjutant to the screens on the computers I'm using. question Which Tablets

The Asus Transformer would also be worthy of consideration, though it has kind of an odd form factor. As far as the port situation on Samsung tablets, I've never even had my 8.9" one plugged in to anything but AC power. It's less hassle to just run file copies over SMB.

VNC is a dog regardless. It was made for high bandwidth, low-latency networks. There's just no getting around that. It actually uses UltraVNC for its foundation, but that's because many VNC variants don't work properly with UAC prompts on Vista and Windows 7. Hamachi + RDP is my preferred means...

    question Which Tablets

The displays on the Galaxy tablets are wonderful and in fact the 8.9" is my favorite of the tablets I have access to, but the larger ones do not include expandable storage. question Which Tablets

Most 10" Android tablets meet most of those qualifications. I suspect...

The biggest problem I have with istuff is the reliance on itunes to do everything. I can grudgingly accept locking data to an application and Apple's sealed-box approach to its OS, but itunes itself royally sucks. At least the iphone isn't locked into crummy phone networks any more.

As far as I can tell, that hasn't had an impact on retail pricing for brand name systems. I guess the big guys are eating the costs or getting vastly better pricing since their contracts to get more drives are probably a lot better than anybody else's.

Well, yeah. There wasn't any new Windows or Office and no real change in form factor, performance or pricing in the last couple years.
