    How to stop junk mail

Sigh... it's not like it use to be in the day of small town America when you would have a good idea of who actually sent you the junk mail. If you received a flyer from Joe's Tax Services, you could drive down to Joe's house at night and send a message with a burning pile of cow dung on his...

    Beverages

Speaking of ice wines, I had some of the best ice wine in my life at Chateau des Charmes in Niagara on the Lake. I can't remember which one it was, but it was damn good. I think some of you may have heard of Inniskillin ice wine (probably our most famous Ontario ice wine)... the stuff from...

    Beverages

Ah, I see some of you like wines from Alsace and Mosel (Rieslings and Gewurztraminers). These are some of my favourite whites (and yes, whites are passe these days compared to reds and, I have noticed in particular, the Aussie Shiraz). I am still searching for fine examples of Auslese type...

I need a color laser printer

Their LaserJet 42x0/43x0 series are excellent workhorse printers that have proven themselves in the corporate workgroup environments I've seen them in. They have 200,000+ page monthly duty cycles -- far and away higher than almost any printer HP makes. And they can be found for under $1,000 US new.

    Who's using Mozilla?

I used to find Firefox useful at work, but they have since given me an official warning of "illegal software detected (Firefox) -- please remove immediately". I think this goes somewhere on my employee record too. Quite silly seeing as whenever I use IE, I get popups that try to install all...

    Who's using Mozilla?

Forgot to add that I like gmail enough to have switched from POP based e-mail and POP mail clients like my favourite Outlook 2000 (Outlook XP OTOH is brain dead in that it refuses to recognize that mail left on the server has already been downloaded before and persists in downloading all 50 MB...

    Who's using Mozilla?

They have. It's called gmail :) Seriously, it's been refreshingly competent compared to my other webmail based e-mail services (hotmail, Horde IMP, mail2web). My favourite features are its automatic address completion feature (you start typing a person's e-mail addresses and it presents a list...

Can I get a hand from a torrent fiend?

I have been getting poor results with torrentspy of late as well. For that matter, my WinMX stopped working several months ago. I can see files on the network, but I can never initiate a successful download. I used to get awesome torrent and WinMX speeds at one point through my 6 Mbit / 800...

Yes, it certainly is interesting how there are so many Aussies on this forum. Has it been through word of mouth (e.g., Tannin, Pradeep, et al spreading the word) or does SF project a massive banner ad onto the Opera House at night? :) For that matter, there number of Canadians on this forum are...

    Disclosing info to Paypal

Checks are definitely a PITA. Aren't people using e-mail money transfer (EMT) down in the US now? The tech savvy are starting to use it in Canada for things like: You owe a friend $20 from dinner a couple nights ago, but you won't see him for another few weeks You buy something from a friend...

    Disclosing info to Paypal

Well, I do like that PayPal was at one point the universal standard. Then they had competing payment services like BidPay and some sellers would refuse PayPal and only accept BidPay, which was annoying if you didn't want to set up multiple accounts with different payment services.

When we got hit with the Blaster worm 2 summers ago, my company's IT department didn't have the systems patched up and they had everyone's systems locked down with no administrative privileges. Disclosing info to Paypal

Interesting. Last year I was buying a lot from ebay and just stayed away from merchants who only accepted a money order or PayPal via a bank account. It is good to know that they are requiring merchants to allow any PayPal transaction. I thought that merchants didn't like CC-sourced PayPal...

    Stupid Lawsuit

Don't agree with that... Let's look at two typical tea making scenarios at home: 1. The immediate pour into the tea cup or tea pot, straight from the kettle as soon as the water has boiled method. When the water comes out of the kettle, it is already below 95 C if you pour it shortly after the...

    Stupid Lawsuit

Well perhaps stupid is too strong a word, but it was still her fault, and as an adult, she should be responsible for her own actions. Why is everyone absolving her of being reponsible for the consequences of her actions? Was she mentally retarded? Was she forced to pour the coffee on her lap by...

    Stupid Lawsuit

Hmm... I think our temperature references are a bit different, time, but I will concede that the temps at McDonald's may have been a bit hotter than home brew with tea using a kettle > teapot > tea cup process, but I find it hard to believe that a person would sue someone else for their own...

This Call May Be Recorded For Quality Assurance

Oh, I'm sure a lot of big telco, cable, and wireless companies are the same. There is something infuriating about paying someone for the privilege of (1) getting duped in a way that makes intelligent people who do their due diligence feel like complete fools, and (2) getting shafted and not...

    Stupid Lawsuit

That's ridiculous Greg. Coffee and tea is supposed to be hot. The kind of hot that everyone knows will burn you if you spill it on yourself like a clutz. In order to NOT burn skin, it would have to be served below 50 C (120 F). What coffee/tea drinker would drink stuff that tepid? If someone...

This Call May Be Recorded For Quality Assurance

I would like to share a couple telemarketing stories, though. In Toronto, I find Rogers Promotions particularly aggressive and deceptive. Aggressive: I dismissed an aggressive agent peddling cable promotions one time very firmly. I had to yell at him to stop his pitch, say I'm not interested...

This Call May Be Recorded For Quality Assurance

I have significantly reduced the amount of telemarketers I have had to talk to by listening for the usual 2 second pause that dialing systems inevitably cause. Canada also has some provisions like that in its legal system that prevents frivolous lawsuits... can't remember what it was, but you never see Canadians suing McDonald's for making them fat or for making the coffee too hot such that it burns when they spill it on their lap. They could easily...

There's a bunch of apartments/condos in every city that are above or adjacent to a mall that not only has a grocery store on premises, but often a cinema, bookstore, music store, electronics store, clothing stores, banks, restaurants, and a food court right on a metro/subway/LRT transit line. GM Employee Discount for Everyone until July 5th

GM Employee Discount for Everyone until July 5th
