Can anyone else play this video successfully? For me it has an overriding buzz and the video is a 1FPS slideshow. Trying to help a friend apply for a college team. http://m.ustream.tv/recorded/73114683?rmalang=en_US

    Tesla doomed

Very troll-y language with very little substance. Do you have an undisclosed horse in this race? And what is this "your boy" BS? Let's take this back to what it should be about; some companies and the odds of their success. Tesla: Profitable (in the same way the other US automakers are, with...

This is the thread for the discussion of interesting apps.

I think you're asking if it is safe enough to buy an app for your phone from your phone? Sure. If you're asking if it is safe to use some kind of e-wallet to purchase things at a physical store? I'm not comfortable saying that yet.

    networking from a wireless dongle

Comcast has such a lock around here that anytime I've threatened them they've just let me go. They know all the other options (DSL or wireless) suck.

What to do with a problem like VGA?

For me that is the biggest selling point of Ultrsharp Dells over their cheaper ones; more connection options.

T1 lines here are also $450 a month. Even now the internet connection at my office is 14 T1 lines at $450 a month. This is why I'm so stoked. Currently: $6300 for 21mbps Soon: $4400 for 1000mbps If I could get a gig for $500/mo I'd have one at home.

    networking from a wireless dongle

Years ago I used very early Ubiquiti equipment in the 2.4Ghz range to fire a point-to-point right down main street, about 5 miles. A site survey showed hundreds of APs, dozens without any security at all. Some clever coding and more radios and I could have harvested all the internet bandwidth I...

Probably won't do most of the things you're after, but my wife and I use a joint LastPass account. It has all the credentials to all of the things and is on both our phones and all the computers. That and a joint DropBox make things really easy.

Wireless AC can actually give higher speeds than gigabit ethernet. I'd recommend some USB3 wireless AC adapters for max performance. (Also much easier to troubleshoot than an intermediary device).

    Tesla doomed

I know two people who placed orders (I'm one). Both of us are anticipating deliveries midway though 2018 even though we were some of the first. While I doubt the subsidies will be pulled, it wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me. I also anticipate the cost of the one I'm thinking of to be in the...

    Something Random

Almost. Every month I'm charged $5 for the ability to take or put energy into the grid as needed. Actual usage is only calculated once a year when they look at the net for the entire period. At that point I pay somewhere between $0.21 and $0.36 depending on how much I went over. If they owe me...

This is why I pay the utility company $5/mo; to treat them like a giant battery. When I use more power than I produce, my electric meter runs forward. When I produce more than I use, it runs backwards. The difference over a year is all that I care about at the moment. This is a pretty standard...

I've been planning this for quite some time. When I redid the electrical service in the house 8 years ago I ran a 240V/100A circuit into the garage that terminates in a dedicated sub-panel. This should be able to charge a pair of electric cars overnight. When I did the design for the garage I...

    Something Random

If you produce your own electricity, you are helping them reduce load on their distribution network. If you produce more you become competition. Still irrational, but that is my guess. Peak loads, and loads when production is low is handled by the grid. Same as my excess production during the...

    Tesla doomed

You're right of course, as evidenced by his other colossal failures (PayPal, SpaceX, SolarCity) Right again. I'd have been far more confident of their success had half as many people shown serious interest in their product. Of course not; this is someone entering into a known marketplace...

This was actually very intentional. Around here, our power company will not let you install more generation than your average consumption. Blue is me, grey is my neighborhood average, green is an "efficient" house (whatever that means). There is a monthly fee ($30? something like that) for being connected to the grid and using it like a battery. No complaints there. They also buy back any excess power (though at a really low rate...

    Exchange Database Woes (Again)

    Exchange Database Woes (Again)

Nothing is entirely safe. Larger organizations that can devote enough skilled staff to maintain their own e-mail/spam/AV/calendar/etc system in a secure way can have a system more secure than trusting it with Google. Most companies running Exchange do not fall into this category.

    Exchange Database Woes (Again)

This first-gen Dell 32" 4k in front of me now positively sucks. Running it in DP1.2 (60hz) causes constant loss of sync and corrupted video. I'm looking forward to replacing it with something a bit bigger that can handle 4k@60 reliably.

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

I've had a 2-post rack in the living room for years, but I think it is time to transition to a 4-poster. Due to cable length limitations it was important for the rack to be close to the desk. Now that USB 3.1 and HDMI 2.0 over fiber are a thing I can put the hardware further away. I may even...
