If there was a router with a Usb port that would do rsync.... Put another one at your friend's house and now you have offsite backup. Encrypt it at the file level and Im not sure what more you could want for home use.

I use an app called Pocket informant to sync my gcal to the iPhone. Incedentally I also sync PI to toodledo. I use synkinablink to sync my gcontacts to the iPhone built in address book which then syncs to exchange. I also set up gcaldaemon to download my contacts periodically for backup purposes.

You should also help him with a real backup solution that will get him back on his feet quickly. Something like Acronis 2010 home or the Symantec equivalent.
