    Normalizing mp3s

Onomatopoeic, How good is the Aphex Aural Exciter? ~ 15 years ago I wanted to buy one, but didn't. I have a ton of one-of-a-kind live recordings made with poor equipment - mono portable cassete recorders - and the sound is horribly crummy. IIRC, the Aphex can put back harmonics that got lost...

I wish. I support a medical practice that uses a very advanced practice management system (paperless, workflow, etc.) While this sw is really pioneering new advances (founder/chief architect is a physician who got an MBA and turned an entrepreneur), it requires users to have admin rights. They...

Couldn't agree with you more, Time. I previously was running MacAfee AV, then in April of 2003 installed Norton Systemworks 2003 Pro (free after rebates) which comes with AV. I've always prided myself on having a clean system, and in being careful with my online habits. Some days ago, the AV...

Win XP compatibility with 16-bit programs

I have zero knowledge/experience in this area. I know MS has a list on their website somewhere. What I'm looking for is real-world experience. How well does WinXP handle 16-bit programs written for W95 and W95 and maybe even W311? Thanks.

    Reconnecting External Drive

I played around a bit with USB flash drives on my W2k Prof. system. Seems to be no way to accomplish what you want. W2k help blithely states "To reinstall the device, connect the device to the appropriate slot or port", implying that you have to physically disconnect before reconnecting.

Thanks, Howell. My usual method is to create the ISO on the hard drive, mount the ISO, then install from the ISO. That way the game "sees" a consistent drive letter and doesn't freak out when started. Methinks the problem CDs have some form of copy-protection, that's why installing from the...

    FPS in 96kb

AFAIK, the only way they can have such a small footprint is to write in assembler. Not a trivial task, but the end result can be tiny and very, very fast. Some millenia ago, I learned programming by coding in assembler on a mainframe precursor. For recent examples, see Steve Gibson's site; he's...

    Gaming off the LAN? Feasibile?

$275 * 2 = $550 vs. $600 with the corresponding reduction in number of spindles, meaning less power draw, fewer hot-swap bays. In my view, this would be a worthwhile trade off. You've got an interesting problem to solve!

For NT class Op. sys. I spend more time "resolving www....." than waiting for the web page to load; my ISP's (Adelphia) DNS servers must be crappy. I remember there used to be programs that cached DNS entries locally and used that to go to a web site rather than query DNS servers. I searched...

Aah, my friend, therein lies the secret. The change instigated beyond your control, you can do nothing about. But what is absolutely in your power is how you react. Being creatures of habit, we react in the same, worn-a-groove ways. But you can change that. Not overnight. It's like turning a...
