    Zip program with specific features

Whew! A lot of posts all of a sudden. I didn't time my compresssion, so I can't be definitive. Going by gutfeel, it seems slow. But that could be because of the reasons I've already mentioned. Compression resluts (damn Merc and his Veronica) seem to vary; my Netscape email went from ~318MB to...

    Old Celeron 300A/BH6

You're right! You know, the m/c is 100% stable, but when it was my main m/c, I could not get Caldera Linux (2.x, I believe), to install. No matter what. It would crap out during install with a fatal error and reboot immediately, so I didn't even know what the error was. I tried...

    Goodbye (for now)

Seconded. Going about killing those handsome animals! Tsk, Tsk. I'll bet one of the four hunters was Pradeep. Why do you think he bought a set of expensive snow tyres for his car? Just you wait, DB, when it really snows, he'll out-tyre and out-gun ya.

It seems to choke a lot on .pdf files. Dunno why. And .exe files too. So you think it'll still be slow if I build an Opteron 248 system with 15k.3 drives?

I tried replying here twice yesterday, trying to use additional emoticons, and it crapped out on me both times. I'll stick to just the standard emoticons now. I sent an email to support@ some outfits that make compresison programs. Pkware said sorry, no can do. Winzip said they had a...

    Old Celeron 300A/BH6

Back when the 300A came out, I bought a BH6 and overclocked the 300A 50%. When I built my current m/c circa December 2000, the BH6/300A became my daughter's m/c. I've ripped all her CDs (stuff like Reader Rabbit, Math Blaster, etc.) and they run on a virtual CD drive; I got tired of swapping 25+...

jtr, I agree with you on the money issue. I've never wanted to be super rich; just have enough to pay the bills, have decent housing, transportation, health care and educate my one kid well so that she can do likewise. Having a decent pot will take the worry off tomorrow, and let dreamers like...

    How to market SATA

I guess you're right in that SATA can be pretty competitive with SCSI assuming the drives are similar (RPM, TCQ, etc.). But I think SAS will get the upper again when it comes out, no?

    How to market SATA

Aah! The precise Fushigi! I hear you, but the issue in this post was SCSI drives, SCSI controllers and transfer rates. As such, the host, controller cache and OS are immaterial. I've never personally used SCSI, so pardon my ignorance and correct me if I'm wrong. If you have an 8-drive RAID-5...

    How to market SATA

Fushigi's running 65 raided drives in 8 sets on one host; he said that in response to a post I'd made, but I can't seem to find that post right now to reference it. He's got practical knowledge of this situation; maybe he can shed some light on this.

    Quiz: Coders or killers?

Thanks for the replies. CityK, I don't want to end up with a single archive file. That means I don't want the directory structure (and all of the files) inside the archive. Blake has understood what I'm trying to do. Ideally, the original filename is left intact, and the archive type (zip...

Anybody know of a Zip program that'll do this: Replicate a given tree structure and each file in it to a new destination, compressing during replication. In other words, I don't want a 6-level tree structure with 35 directories and 2000 files total being compressed down to one archive file...

    Dell 1800FP TFT - thoughts?

IMHO, the 1900FP and the newer 1901FP have much better specs. I know somebody with a Dell 1700FP; it sucks so bad, I couldn't use it if it were my monitor. I also got a 1900FP for somebody; it's an absolutely gorgeous, beautiful monitor; a pleasure to look at and use all day.

Viewing digital pics on a DVD

Can anybody suggest software that can burn pics on a CD so it can be viewed on a DVD/TV? Support for folders will be helpful. HP agrees with Tannin, Merc, et. al.

I was trying to point out that the reason HP is doing this is because the mom-pop types account for a big chunk of the market. Because they offer faster, better service that the big guys can't match. Wasn't this point debated at length with y'all on one side and Mr. H. Dell on the other?
