    8TB and no helium

I used a small flathead screwdriver and a couple pry tools. It took about two minutes per drive and cost a few of the plastic tabs. The only screws were used to stabilize the drive to rubber grommets, not hold anything down.

I just deshelled and installed 6x 5TB Seagate drives in my file server. They're in a double-parity array, but I have concerns about how well they'll work in an array since I'm almost positive they're 5900rpm units. If they don't work, they'll get turned back in to externals. 5TB is big enough...

Fast CPU for video transcoding? Xeon?

It certainly doesn't look BAD. My test encode was the Zeffarelli production of Turandot, which has a crap-ton going on on-screen. Lots of blacks, lots of difficult to compress complexity. I can see small differences side by side on frozen frames, but it's nothing to complain about, though I may...

    8TB and no helium

I tend to be conservative with overvolting since I want it to be as quiet as possible. Oddly enough, if my machine boots at high OC settings, it's fine seemingly no matter what I throw at it (mostly lots and lots of Handbrake). I haven't had it bluescreen even once. It's just that the board...

Lunar, what RAM are you using to stay stable at 4.5GHz with 64GB installed? I can stay stable at 4.5GHz with 2x8GB Crucial 2133 sticks, but the minute I put the other two back in, I need to be back at 3.8GHz or else it's a 50/50 chance that my rig won't even boot. Are you just overvolting the...

Fast CPU for video transcoding? Xeon?

I've been playing with Handbrake's HEVC encoding options on a Linux VM. If I specify the usual bit rate for a BD encode (4000kb/s), I get a file that's about 20% smaller than x.264 but an encode that takes about 40% longer. I can't see a quality difference. I must be missing a library to enable...

I figured out my issue last night. I had my optical drive on a SATA port that's shared with the M.2 drive. Rather than disabling one port or the other while there were two drives connected, my motherboard started routing the M.2 drive through USB, which is also part of the interface. The...

As I understand things, you can even do asynchronous load-sharing. You don't even have to match the GPUs for connected hardware any more.

    Best movie you've seen

Powers is a comic book series by Brian Michael Bendis. It's not part of any other extended universe, but it's been running for 15 years or so. It's basically a police procedural set in a world where Super Heroes are are media darlings. Apparently Sony made it in to an ongoing series and it's...

I have enough drives for at least two full copies of my data set plus spares and parity snapshops. I'm probably fine on that front for at least two years. I try to replace an array at a time to give the library room to grow. I'm kind of stuck at the moment as far as with what to replace the 3TB...

    I've discussed my storage setup before. I'm sure you've read those posts. For sed's benefit: My main desktop is a 32GB Haswell-E @ 4GHz (12 threads) with a GT 970, a 500GB Plextor M.2 and 1TB Corsair SSD + a few 3 or 4TB drives. My main file server has 24 4TB and 18 3TB drives at the moment...

I think that would be sub-optimal given the hard error rate and stated performance characteristics. I have occasional need to move around a tremendous amount of static content and unfortunately BTsync doesn't handle mutliterabyte-size loads very well. That is not a euphemism for pr0n.

I've been trying to buy four of the 8TB Seagate drives for about a week now. An A10 is going to give you nothing to complain about, certainly. They're respectable midrange CPUs. I'm not sure about an MSI motherboard vs. Gigabyte or apparently ASrock, but in all probability you'll get a lot of use out of whatever you buy and you may even be in a position to actually...

question RDP patch broken in Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 by Windows Update?

RDP all on its own is really efficient. It's usable over a 28.8kbps dialup connection. On a 100Mbit+ connection, it's usable for HD video playback. More efficiency is better, but I don't know if that's someplace I'd devote engineering effort.

I don't leave much free space on my phone's card, so for days when I expect to need the camera functions (comic cons etc), I swap in a fresh one and keep another in my bag in case the first gets full. This is a lot better than having to clear space off to...

While we're nit-picking, an awful lot of things show up in finder that want to scroll horizontally. I realize that Apple's pointing devices support that via gestures, but not everyone uses Apple's pointing devices or gestures more generally.
