    Noise from 10k Drives

I am into silent computing. Well, quiet computing, anyways. I have tamed a case full of 4 WD drives enough that I barely notice them. Ditto with an Atlas 10k3 (although there are limits to how much you can muffle coffee grinder seeks and a strong whine). You can always reduce the noise level of...

Well that's it right there. You work at a small company where it is a LOT easier to deal with IT strategy, implementation, and most of all, change. A large, publically traded corporation has plenty of difficult issues to deal with, and the hindrances to planning and delivering on a successful IT...

I don't know about that recommendation for Tony's needs... even in AWD form (I don't know if they sell a Bora Variant in Aus), the Jetta would be hopeless off-road.

    New car time ... confused

Hey, a car party and I wasn't invited? :) Well, I can't add much to what has already been said, but to say that Subaru immediately came to mind when I read your requirements. Yes, it uses more gas than some of its wimpy small displacement 4-cylinder competitors, but you're getting the wonderful...

    March Break Effect?

I think the historical gas price charts are based on the average of all gas prices submitted from members on that day in T.O. If you take a look at the Torontogasprices.com homepage, you can see some of the individual data points from the lowest/highes gas prices in the city tables.

    March Break Effect?

Indeed. Tues has been a good time to get gas in March. But it doesn't always hold true. For a while, I noticed late Sunday night / Monday AM was a good time to fill up, but as you said, early Tuesday became the best time in March.

    Thread revisited: Laptop recommendations

Drop in a 7k60 and a 256 MB SO-DIMM and it performs well enough for most uses. A 3.75 lb magnesium beauty. My only complaints are that the battery life is fairly short and the fan is quite noisy.

Centrino may not be the name of an Intel processor, but to qualify as a Centrino notebook, it must meet certain criteria that speak to mobility and connectivity. One of them involves the CPU. Currently, the P-M CPU is deemed as the CPU worthy of meeting the Centrino standards of power...

Good point, mubs. 1400x1050 is becoming more common on 14-15" displays, which is just too small unless you have very good eyes. mubs also makes a good point about deciding how many spindles you want onboard. I wanted a very small & light notebook and knew I wouldn't normally need an optical or...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

I forgot to mention that the reason it would have to be Philips is that I can't get Sylvania flourescents around here. The only Sylvania lighting products I can get locally are incandescents (and only from the local supermarket!). Home Depot carries selected Philips incandescents and...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

Indeed. That seems to be the best you can get these days. I know Philips produces T-12's with the same specs: Daylight Deluxe, 4200 K, 89 CRI, 2200 lumens. I am trying to find a Home Depot that carries them. I might try asking them to special order them for me, although I won't be needing them...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

alas, but not to Canada... To me, 4500-5000 K is about pure white, and 4000-4500 K looks like todays' sunlight (granted, it is winter)... but I prefer 3500-4000 K in the bed/bath/living room for aesthetic reasons (those 3700 K/91 CRI GE/Philips "natural" tubes would be perfect). I could...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

Have you tried PAR20/30 halogen (or even R20/30) Reflector floods? I needed maximum light output from a limited amount of fixtures. Most of these fixtures are recessed into the ceiling, so a typical incandescent loses half of its light output inside the fixture. Switching to halogen reflector...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

I still don't like CFL's because of their colour temp and rendition. It's either yellowish 2700 K or bluish 6500 K with a CRI in the low 80's. My definition of white light is around 4000 K and a CRI approaching 100. So far, the only light source that truly satisfies me is those neodymium coated...

You gotta be kidding... My Logitech Cordless mouseman optical doesn't even work for left-handed mousers. Use it on the other side of the keyboard (transceiver base is on the right hand side of the keyboard, directly below the desk), and the signal is too weak.

Seagates new laptop drives are finally avaliable..

They are all standardized like desktop IDE drives. Unless you have an ultra mini notebook, 9.5 mm height 2.5" form factor drives will fit anything. Sometimes, you will have a problem is with some drives that have a lip that prevent them from mating well with certain notebooks' drive slots.

    1. I rarely "start" my browser -- my PC is on 24/7 and the apps I use frequently are always open (myIE2, Outlook, Explorer, Winamp as a bare minimum) 2. And when I do, it's set to resume last visited pages, so I get the 20-30 tabs that I've been dealing with for the last couple weeks

    sick at work?

I also despise sick people coming in to work and infecting everybody else. The worst is when you're stuck in a long meeting with virulent coworkers in a stuffy boardroom. You are trapped. There's nowhere for the germs to go except to be circulated throughout the room.
