I cannot beat Dell in the budget segment.

For the others who want the perceived security of going with a household name, you are not going to change their minds (well, most of them, anyways). Never underestimate the power of brand equity. Dell is a very respected name in the PC industry, and that name alone is worth a couple hundred...

    New system... reinstall OS?

That was a good idea, Pradeep. I forgot about PowerStrip. ... unfortunately, it refuses to work at 1152x864 and requires the chipset drivers to be reinstalled. At other resolutions, it simply kills the video and forces a reboot into safe mode to uninstall PowerStrip.

    New system... reinstall OS?

Just wanted to let people know that the inoperative volume keys problem on my keyboard has been solved by installing the latest (still unreleased at present) 1.12 nForce chipset drivers from nVidia. In addition to fixing the problem with the volume keys, the sound quality is slightly improved...

    Vacuum Tube Motherboard?

Adriel, Very good points from you. I agree with almost everything you have said in this thread. As a former (read: reformed / recovering :) ) hardcore audiophile, I have gone through the various phases of analog/vinyl superiority, high end cabling, tube amplification, etc. and have basically...

:) Please tell me you're running an AMD system. Anyways, the Pande group has done nothing to impress me so far and United Devices has done nothing to violate my trust, so I have no reason to revoke my CPU cycles from the unfragrant Intel-associated cancer research project.

Not true, Coug. I really like my A7N266-VM nForce board. (don't forget integrated video, audio, and LAN) Did you know that the -VM board is overclockable? Yes, it has been confirmed by several members in the nforcershq.com forums. All you have to do is simulate moving one of the BSEL "JEN"...

Heh, well my CPU is now rated at 141 instead of 150. We'll see what value it comes up with tomorrow. One thing that bugs me is the rating for the network card. I am always at 70, even though I have a 100 Mbit card. Is it because I didn't force the card to use full duplex?

Coug, why not build an AMD system? Like Merc and Buck, trying to compete with Intel parts is asking for trouble. But an AMD system? Definitely possible. Here's what I can find at a local retail store: (all prices $CDN) Athlon XP 1800+ retail $157 Asus A7N266-VM nForce $117 integrated GF2MX...

    What web authoring tool used?

In fairness to FrontPage, I did hand-edit some of the HTML elements. Perhaps some of the height parameters and other things that were different were from me. I don't remember since it was quite a while ago, but it is entirely possible that some of the inconsistencies are my fault. As for the...

Strangely enough, the heading spaces are correct when viewed with IE6. Everything views correctly with IE6 except for the e-tailers heading. Cache settings for IE to minimize hitting the hard drive??

If you are going to try another browser, Greg, Opera 6.05 is known for its good caching performance (see the Opera thread).
