    Windows 2000 Service Pack ---> 3 <--- Available

Agree 100% with you, Gary. IMO, 98SE is the best 9x OS while ME is possibly the worst. Maximum bloat, mininum speed and stability. What more could you not ask for in an OS?

    What modem to get?

Obviously, these things are becoming less useful as high speed gains popularity, but they are still useful for faxing. My Sony VAIO notebook is giving me fits when I ask it to do anything communications related (i.e., comunicate to other computers via modem and LAN). It has, until recently, been...

    Windows 2000 Service Pack ---> 3 <--- Available

Hmm... that's about 500 bugs fixed (judging by the list at timwhit's link). How many bugs does that leave unfixed? Back in Feb 2001, MS admitted that there were 28,000 bugs in Win 2k, and another 35,000 "minor issues". I am not complaining, because W2k works quite well for me... but it is...

How Did You Stumble Across The [S]torage [R]eview Website ?

After writing this, I noticed that this became much more than a "how did you find SR?" story, so if you are bored after the first paragraph, just move on to the next post :) Back in the summer of 98, I was looking for a new computer upon moving from Toronto to Edmonton (a couple thousand miles...

anyone know where to buy an AMDK6-III+ online?

Quick, what are the CHS values for ________ ... crap, I can't remember even the model number of an old Seagate 80 MB drive, let alone the CHS values. I know what you mean about repetition, though. I used to have the CD keys memorized for Win 95 and Office 97 because I was reinstalling the...

anyone know where to buy an AMDK6-III+ online?

My solution was to hook up an old drive with unknown CHS values to a newer PC with a auto-detect feature in the BIOS, get the CHS values, write them on an address label, and stick it onto the offending drive.

anyone know where to buy an AMDK6-III+ online?

Heh, memories of IRQ, memory address assignments, and CHS values... If you can believe it, I had to maintain a fleet of computers with those features in 1999. I left shortly after making everything Y2k compliant, but I bet they are still using those 386sx computers at my former job. Ever try...

    Multiprocessing and Multitasking

While I can somewhat understand this jscript menu browsing CPU usage, I do not understand why opening a pop-up window can generate 100% CPU usage and freeze IE for up to 10 seconds with 2 dozen browser windows open for an extended period of time. It even pegs the CPU at 100% and freezes IE for a...

    Multiprocessing and Multitasking

I haven't had enough browser windows open for long enough yet, so my JavaScript pop-ups aren't taking 10 seconds yet, but I still notice quite a bit of CPU usage for such "simple" code. Here is an example of IE using 94% CPU usage when rapidly navigating through the jscript menus...

I exaggerate a bit, as anything above 5 seconds is likely to be in those rare cases where I am saving 5 MB Acrobat files, for example (when was the last time you have even seen a 5 MB Acrobat file?) or when I have 2 dozen browser windows open at the same time, and JavaScript takes over 10...

    IE refuses to refresh pages

Oh, didn't know that was isolated only to IE. And yes, Handruin, I think Shift+Refresh tells IE to check for a new version of the page. I assumed Tony would have tried that already. If IE still doesn't refresh, just go into your Temp Internet Files and delete the offending page.

    IE refuses to refresh pages

Sometimes your ISP routes you through a caching server that thinks it's smarter than you are and refuses to refresh said page. So even if IE requests a new page, the caching server will still serve up the old one. Sometimes they do that by locally configuring your Internet connection to go...

I have an admission to make...

Same sh*t, different pile, as they say. :) SF is a little more close-knit, as people tend to know each other better. Sometimes there are decent threads on one forum that are not on the other, so it may pay to do a quick scan of SR's board every now and then just in case. Then again, some...

Bill, How much did that dual Prestonia setup cost you (could you break it down into mobo, RAM, CPU, case/PS)? I would like to see how far I would have to stretch (okay, explode) my budget... I haven't been able to find any dual Xeon mobo under $400, BTW. That seems to be the most expensive...

What do we all look like

It's one of life's luxuries to be able to do everything you want at top speed without ever having to wait for the computer. This, coincidentally, is my goal. My former boss was a Linux snob. And I have seen a bunch of people on SR that are strong advocates of Linux. I don't consider myself...

We shall have no comments from those running obsolete OSes like Warp! :) ... but yes, I agree with you to a point. I switched to W2k from 98SE for several reasons, including access to the far superior NT kernel with pre-emptive multitasking. I ran NT4 Server as a test case for a few weeks...

What do we all look like

What do we all look like

Hmm... I wasn't hoping for more top-end speed, but to raise my "minimum" speed, if you will -- reducing the bogging that occurs when one CPU is tied up @ 100%. But if you and others are suggesting that there is no extra responsiveness during multitasking, then my whole point of wanting a dual...

    New 17" Monitor

This is somewhat related to the evaluation of various printers. Printers are often based on the exact same print engine (lasers) or printhead design (inkjets). For example, the PhotoSmart P1000 and P1100 came out several years ago with HP's PhotoRet III technology and that particular printhead...

    New 17" Monitor

Interesting indeed. Part of the differences are due to the electronics that go into the monitor, like video amplifiers, power supplies, etc., part of it is naturally high variability in quality between units, part of it is the video card used to drive these monitors, and part of it is the...

    Quiet PCL laser printer recommendations

Yeah, the older, heavier duty printers never die and have lower operating costs, but if you don't want your printer to take up half your desk, you either have to get a bigger desk or a smaller printer. Some interesting information I found... Lexmark is the OEM for the low cost Xerox and Samsung lasers. For example, Tannin's beloved Xerox DocuPrint P8ex is a budget version of Lexmark's Optra E310 printer, much like the Samsung ML-5100A but with the optional PCL6 support. The Xerox Phaser 3210...

    New 17" Monitor

Note that I focussed only on 19" monitors in that previous post, but you can apply the same logic to many of the 17" monitors as well by incrementing (decrementing?) by a few model numbers. Unfortunately, 17" monitors are replacing 15" monitors as the budget models, so many manufacturers and...

    New 17" Monitor

I'll say this: CougTek knows what he's talking about. Not too many people look for the dot clock to check for the theoretical video bandwidth (and therefore video amplifier quality), but it is one of a few good specs to keep an eye on when comparing monitors on paper. Here are some candidates...
