Are we talking about physical adapters or bridge adapters? PCI-E is already setup to bridge to standard PCI slots (should the implementer so choose). I expect to see mixed-slot monsters to come out first. A physical adapter would probably be more effort than its worth.

Seems to me that someone made a mini dye-sub printer for about $300. Of course, paper costs are much higher than for an inkjet -- but they're pretty much photo prints.

I think that you miss the point. Just because something *can* serve two interests does not mean that you can prioritize the interests equally. Inevitably, you end up at least a little bit towards one side or the other, and, theoretically, you'll want to strive towards one goal.
