    Active Directory Domain gotcha

That does make a certain amount of sense, since dcpromo is if nothing else going to involve installing a DNS server for a domain it can manage. If the only options are the reserved APIPA and loopback ranges, it makes sense that it would barf.

Firefox 5, Opera 11.11 and Chrome 12 all equal...

I used IE9 for the first time over the weekend. It was decidedly Chrome-like. I'm not sure how far I'd want the browser UI minimalism to go, but that's definitely the direction the biggest browsers are taking. Google is talking about removing the URL bar from the default view in future versions...

    Sandy Bridge problems

Well, my Asus P8P67 Deluxe died over the weekend at age 58 days. Neither on board NIC nor any of the USB2 ports are functional. So that's nice.

    Avira Alternative

Fun, true fact for the IT guys here: MSE is only free for commercial installations of 10 computers or less. If you're going to ignore that fact, you might as well install better protection in the first place. I've been told Forticlient is another decent free option. I still haven't felt...

    Avira Alternative

MSE is generally not acceptable. It's a drag on system resources, misses too much stuff and is lacking what I consider basic functionality. I've never liked Avira's stupid popup, either.

    Dell PERC 6i failed?

I have a Quantum Superloader library with an LTO4 drive. The setup has a very high startup cost (mine was lightly used) but tapes are cheap and will last, relatively speaking, forever.

Technically, no. In Indiana they're legal to sell but not to use. But no one ever gets in any trouble for it. It's ongoing bullshit and one of the things I hate about this place.

The fucking fireworks started a month ago. They've been going on for a month and they won't stop until about the time that all the inbred wombshits are rounded up and forced back into their schools. Everything about this holiday sucks.

    Scripting help?

No doubt. This is a perfect case of having a problem with a million solutions. Ages and ages ago there was a really cool thread in one of the UNIX groups on USENET about all the different ways you could make the standard utilities to give a directory listing. There were probably hundreds of...

    Dell PERC 6i failed?

Before I had my tape setup, my standard practice was to build a JBOD or RAID0 on some machine I could stuff full of drives for as long as I needed to move data around. If you're using a decent backup program, you can tell it to store backups as chunks of arbitrary file size. That's not all...

    Scripting help?

Oh, probably. But a lot of things Microsoft is doing now aren't exposed to VBS but are exposed to Powershell. Lots of Exchange functionality, for example.

On the other hand, awk is one of those swiss army knife tools that works on everything, once you know it. Microsoft changes its major scripting language at the drop of a hat. Or had you forgotten about Powershell?

Seagate's external enclosures for the last few years have been really awful. Something Random

Where I live now, we have a high cost of living but also salaries that are based on the state rather than regional values. So things like food and gas are very expensive vs. lower than normal salaries. That's the worst of both worlds. I'd take a job if it meant I got to move to Canada, for sure.

My thinking is that I'd do better someplace where the salaries are inflated beyond reason due to high cost of living. The advantage would translate into a huge bonus for retirement savings when I relocate to whatever part of BFE I might ultimately choose for a retirement destination.

    Dell PERC 6i failed?

It's a NAS. It's used for all the craps that NASes are meant to be used for. Which is not the same thing as backup. Even when I was relying on keeping my file servers rsync'd for redundancy I was never deluding myself that doing so was the same thing as a backup, but that appears to be what my...

The no-kidding best deals going for Smartphones and Data Plans in the US, unless you're on some kind of sweetheart deal like mine, are with pay as you go carriers like Cricket (Sprint) and Virgin (Verizon, I think).
