What are your thoughts on automated cars?

Never happen. Insurance compaines out of business. Lawyers loosing many profitable cases. Darwinian dwindling of the gene pool taken out of the mix... Seriously, it's a great idea. Think of all the time we waste driving, that could be used productively, in transit. s

IN retrospect, doesn't IDE, and the computer HD makers suck?

Well, Hi Tea. First off, the thought of buying a new ide drive, just off the production lines, for anything, makes me want to throw up. Buy end of life, proven drives, and use em for storage is the way I like to go. Last time I did this I bought 5 Quantum LM's, for something like 50-75 each...

Prof Wizard: What I've found is that if you shop carefully, you can setup scsi for little enough more then IDE, that in the long run, you save money. I bought an oem uw scsi card 99 dollars, with cable, and have a 10k cheetah hooked up to it for an old mac. It's not huge, 18 gigs, but for...

    Time for Heresey!

I've never understood the need for huge storage these days, when you can burn CD's for data, and DVD's for data, for 50 cents or less, for 600 MB. Seems like it's been neglected, but I suspect server type caching algorithims, and the large caches on cheetahs, function better in a random access...

    Time for Heresey!

Access time, cache, algorithims, all that neat stuff. I just like everything about scsi but the price, and the fact that it's expensive since royalties are paid to Intel, but the world isn't perfect. I guess my real specific liking is for Seagate's Cheetahs. Haven't found one I didn't like... s

I hate to say I told you so but: IDE PERFORMANCE MILESTONES by Santilli 1. Scsi hits 15k and 3.9 ms three years ago. 2. IDE hits an 8 mb of cache, on a 7200 rpm drive, and it's hailed as the second coming. However, it took longer. taking about 3 years to go from the previous milestone...

Pradeep: Yep, atto 32 bit vs. the later card being 64 bit/66mhz. Difference would only have been about 10 mb/sec on a board that's 32/33mhz. In other words, when I bought it, the faster bus was just becoming avaliable. Suspect these days same drives, on a current mobo and controller, could...

OK: Some quick questions: Is anyone building a SAS or S-ATA controller that gives you any kind of value? What are the cable costs going to be like? From reading a bit, I gather all the big boys are behind this one, Seagate, etc. What are the interface differences that give is similar, or not...

Problem with the drive is that you have to hook it up to a controller. The problem with ide, serial, whatever, is it's low cost, and, so are the controllers. Another problem is I save my money, and buy stuff that I hope doesn't break every three years, or less. Most of the people here are...
