    Windows 7 nonsense

At least one company I work for mandates that I set all passwords for every user to the same thing. The guy who owns the business wants free reign to check in on anything his employees might be doing and that's more important to him than external security. Yes, he's nuts. In a non-psychotic...

Is that 1540/2100 - the one with the essay, or 1540/1600, the old style test? 'Cause IIRC you're too young to have taken the test I took. 1480/1600, 3.8GPA.

I'm under the impression that ddrueding was a bit of a fuckhead when he was younger. ;) Getting in to those school requires either a great deal of talent or a lot of social pull. My oldest brother went to Northwestern as a C student from a poor-quality high school basically because my dad had...

    Thoughts about educational systems

Most high profile schools weight "legacy" applicants very, very heavily, since successful parents are also likely to be big donors once their kids get in. It's not entirely nepotism (the parents are not DIRECTLY responsible for admission, anyway) so much as helping to ensure that the endowment...

If it came down to it I'd probably slip in to a chain eyewear store and ask for help. I'd offer to pay or tip if necessary. Generally speaking the employees at those place are probably going to be apathetic enough that it's not an issue where the glasses came from.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Dual Xeons have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with your storage setup. Given an X25E I could put together an Intel Atom-based system in a PC that's slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes that would smoke your dual Xeons + X15s. You're conflating CPU performance with storage subsystem performance...

    Windows 7 nonsense

You could run local copies of any mail client and download each user's mail someplace. Outlook Express, say. Or Thunderbird. There's a very simple *nix app called fetchmail that could deliver each of your users' E-mails to a local Linux mail server, if you know each user's Gmail password. You...

SSDs - State of the Product?

i7 + Gigabyte X58-UD5 + 3x Radeon 4890 x2s = maybe a $2500 computer all in. Other than the insane power consumption that's not as insane as buying something that will do modern Xeons in an SMP configuration + SCSI/SAS drives so you can rip DVDs faster. :rotfl: <-- Rare deliberate emoticon

Also, Greg: NO ONE WHO POSTS AT SF - NOT ME, NOT DDRUEDING, NOT LUNARMIST OR HANDRUIN OR TIMWHIT, NEEDS A XEON-BASED SYSTEM AT HOME. I wouldn't mind having one just because 16-port SATA/SAS cards are much cheaper in PCI-X, but Xeons are for a sort of CPU workload that you as an individual are...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Greg, I'm going to tear my hair out. You were looking at different kinds of Xeons, with different underlying logic even down to the CPU core. EVERYONE in Intel-land went through some amount of "faster then (apparently) slower" when Intel moved from CPUs based on the Pentium 4 architecture to...

Acronis version 11 does indeed suck. Version 10 works great, though. I have yet to make a Sysprepped Image of Vista work with anything other than ImageX, though. LifeHacker had an article on Image-based backup tools a while back.

I'm under the impression, and I might be wrong, that just about every business anyplace has some line of business app someplace that doesn't work with Vista for one reason or another. SSDs - State of the Product?

STR is not normally a huge part of a typical user's workload. It makes a difference on OS load and for starting certain huge applications, but superfast seeks are really the reason to look at fast-spinning disks and SSDs. That 29x faster seek is a HELL of a lot more important in everyday disk...

Companies are gonna skip Win7, too. That's actually troublesome on a couple of levels; deployments are normally good for hiring/contracting, and rollouts are good for spending on training. Basically businesses are looking at new Windows as a cost. Win7 doesn't do very much that's actually...

I got an OCZ Vertex 120GB drive yesterday. It's definitely faster for writes than my X25-Ms but read performance as measured by system startup seems to be about the same, with Server 2003 needing about 16 seconds on either drive. I can't quite bring myself to cough up for an SLC drive though.

I don't ever need to search for files. I'm anal-retentive about putting things where they belong so I don't have to. Email, maybe, but even then it's unlikely. Even though I keep every message I have in my inbox I can usually narrow down date and sender that searching isn't an issue.
