    Switching to VoIP service

My ex- asked me about Vonage service tonight. She looked into it and was told by some Vonage salesdroid that their VoIP service doesn't work with home routers. Huh?!? Vonage apparently doesn't show their support site to non-subscribers, so I have no idea what they could even be talking about...

    ATX desktops are bad

It's not economically viable to replace the HSFs, PSUs or cases for every machine unless I can demonstrate a clear and immediate need. Even if it only took me 15 minutes to make a parts swap, that's still paying me for a day and a half of work + cost of whichever part x 60. The larger issue to...

Well, my Matsonic motherboard + C3/2000 can in fact saturate a 100Mbit network link by itself. If nothing else, that means it'd work as a storage appliance.

    ATX desktops are bad

Why all the desktops? The woman who owns the company I work for doesn't like tower cases. Buck, are you talking about Compucase Desktop or Tower cases? I bought Compucase towers for as long as I could find them as part of my standard build and I don't EVER remember seeing idle CPU temps above...

    ATX desktops are bad

Background: I maintain about 60 PCs in a classroom setting for my day-job as an IT trainer. Of those PCs, 24 are in Enlight 7200 desktop cases. Another 12 are inCompucase 7106s while the rest are in cases visually similar to the Evercase e1205, but without the front panel. These machines...

What I'm not going to do tonight

What does mobilizing the military to set up communication networks have to do with declaration of martial law? The two things are entirely different. In the event that the disaster hadn't been serious, the military could've just declared the whole affair to be a joint-training exercise or...

What I'm not going to do tonight

Mr. Bush could and should have mobilized the military beforehand. I'm not just talking about the Army Corps of Engineers or about Medics. The US military is full of people who know how to use heavy equipment and how to build hardened communications and logistical networks. I'm sure there were...

I guess I should say one more thing: The overall user experience that I have had so far with Vista essentially comes down to a few simple statements. More specifically, there is no BIOS on an Intel Mac. They use OpenFirmware instead, which Vista supports and XP doesn't. I can't see using one of those as an HTPC. Well, to date I've found 3 useful programs that use .NET, and some versions of ATI's drivers require them (I don't install those versions). I haven't found that .NET hurts anything, other than being another potential way for binaries to execute on a computer.

Nothing makes a better picture than a CRT. I'm fond of DLP, as it's available for larger screen sizes than LCD, but prices on LCD displays have come down, while DLP remains expensive, and DLP needs new bulbs every so often (I'm on the second one for my TV). LCD screens have gotten bigger and...
