In rough order of likelihood, I'd say the causes of WPEs are most often drivers - especially display drivers or real-mode network drivers, motherboard "issues" or bad RAM. Or, possibly that hard disk with the bad sectors. You're gonna replace that, right?

What's wrong with standard wire ties? When I want my cabling to look neat, I use 4" or 8" ties every 2 inches or something along the run of the cabling.

Demonoid.com has a cracked OSXx86 10.4.4 (that's the shipping version) generic install DVD online. No support for nVidia graphics (go Apple!) or CPUs that don't have SSE2, and AMD users have to apply another patch to make it work, but it's out there.

You don't need anything else to capture DV, except 1394 ports. For that matter, if your DVd camcorder is nice enough, it'll have inputs on it, and you can use those to handle your analog sources as well. I have two or three of the Plextor hardware divx encoders. They're kind of flakey hardware...
