SuSE, until recently, hasn't been distributable from CD/DVD. It was available on LiveCDs and from SuSE FTP sites...

Companies that don't get it (job postings)

Minor editorial problems aren't THAT big of a deal. I wouldn't want to work for a company that didn't proofread business communication, but everyone makes a mistake every once in a while. What I hate nowadays is the unerring specificity in job postings: "Must have 25 months experience with AJAX...

AMD to crap on customers, Q1 06

It's just Albatron. Their Intel boards have those same issues. 9600s work fine with the Gigabyte K8T800-based board. More widely, I can say I object to motherboards made for the "lights in cases" crowd - DFI, Soyo, Asus, MSI, Chaintech... Abit is the worst of the bunch. They get all the press...

    iTunes backup

Has anyone had to backup iTunes, format a drive and then restore iTunes? I have a customer bringing me a laptop with 41GB of iTunes files (read: many thousands of dollars, even at $.99 a track), who says he has so much spyware crap on his 2.4GHz notebook that it's taking a half hour to start...

Suggestions for hooking up cable internet. Part II

That is foreign to my experience. Usually I install Netgear or Linksys hardware at customer sites. The couple of times I've done something optimistic like put an AP/router up in a drop ceiling, it's had to come down because it's stopped routing or switching or whatever.

    Current video card recommendations

Allstarshop almost always has the lowest prices in the US on ATI cards. But from personal experience I can also tell you they have problems with inventory - knowing whether something is in stock, and shipping it in anything like a timely fashion. I'm a big fan of Gigabyte-based ATI cards for...

I believe we've had this discussion before, but I know of no reason not to choose a working and stable Via solution over a buggy and weird nVidia one. Via stuff works. Year in and year out I purchase and build around four dozen Via-based systems. I put the parts together (any collection of...

Suggestions for hooking up cable internet. Part II

The truth is, Firewall + SPI is really about all you can hope for or need, unless you need to do QoS (bandwidth throttling) or a VPN end-point. If you're running XP SP2, I wouldn't recommend turning off the builtin firewall. It's simple and does very little in the way of logging but as far as I...

I'd guess that the numbers on just about any techie site would skew heavily to non-IE browsers; we're more aware of the alternatives. No. Things don't work that way. Unless you've got a multithreaded process - Adobe Premier for instance - your encoding app is going to be assigned to run on one processor and stay there. So if Santilli is getting twice as many encoded frames per second on a Xeon vs. his A64, that is a 1:1...

If you're talking about just ripping, that's a function of the DVD drive you're using. If you're talking about encoding, the important thing is that you can buy four Athlon 3000s for what those two Xeons cost, and those A64s will be faster for absolutely everything else.
