Solaris. I read Lem's novel when I was in college, in a "Literary Science Fiction" class. The movie basically covers the book's major plot points and not much else. But... 1. It is beyond gorgeous to look at. The DP and the art director both deserve real credit for their work. 2. The score...

Resurrection of old macintosh g3 333mhz

I just bought a substantial number of Optorite (Sony) drives for $130 apiece. Newegg. ZIP disks are the antithesis of a long term storage option. Zip disks are for data you don't like. Seriously. For IDE, remember that you can get 3 80GB drives for the cost of a decent 36GB 10k SCSI unit...

    DVD player troubles

No consumer electronics are made to last. You know better than that. From examination, I can even say that Pioneer's inexpensive jukeboxes are identical to Onkyo's high-end megachangers (there might be some differences in internal components, but since the shipping weights are within a few...

    [NEWS] - Mandrake 9.2 kills LG CD-ROM

Certain revisions of LG firmware have the microcode for the ATAPI "Query for Writable State" set to the same thing as "Firmware flash". So, during Mandrake's install, when it checks to see if you've got a burner, and even if you don't, it goes "poof". Updating to the new firmware on LG's site...

    DVD player troubles

I found mine through froogle.com. A yahoo store. It was $380 including the shipping. Not bad when I think about how much I paid for my first DVD jukebox. Also, Sony jukeboxes, in one of their great redeeming qualities - I'm not a fan of Sony electronics but in this case no one else has a...

    DVD player troubles

That's characteristic of DVD players that are dead or dying. I'm sure you've run into the same thing with CD players that don't read CDs any more and CD burners that lose their ability to burn. Fortunately, your new DVD player will cost a lot less than your old one. :) Since burners are also...

Resurrection of old macintosh g3 333mhz

Is someone making a Mac-compatible SATA controller? A brand new X15 for a G3 is probably overkill, but knowing Greg's position on IDE disks, I think it's better that way than dealing with the inconsistencies of the Raptor (the whole "some are louder" and "some are faster" issues that have no...

    Stupid Google tricks

    Best movie you've seen

I've seen Kill Bill four times now. The strange thing is, I was the only person in the theater at two of the showings, and every showing I've been to, there's been less than a dozen people. I don't think the residents of the Hoosier state get it. To be honest, it's not on the same level with...

    Sad...my dogs really sick

Spent most of the day at the vet's. Bugging the crap out of the staff, no doubt. Her red cell count was about 3%...

I hate to appropriate CityK's thread but it's probably more appropriate than starting another. I got up at my usual 5:45ish this morning. My cat Gracie wasn't on my bed. Which is unusual, because Gracie is almost always on my bed. She's a snuggling cat who has her own side of my bed and a...

    MS software RAID

Soft RAID1 has always been OK on NT/2000. It's the other ones that lead to interesting combinations of swear words. The 3ware card offers parallelized reads, which unlike soft-RAID, do provide a modest boost to read performance. If I had the option, I'd probably use the 3ware card for that reason.

Windows network drivers for Linux, thanks to wrapper

That's a good question timwhit. The best thing you could do, however, is post a few new topics if you have time. I note that we get a lot of spectators here, people who drop by and read everything but never post. That would be OK except... why did those people log in? I don't want to have...
