    Mobile Phones

My phone is a Kyocera, about 3 years old now (it's the right size and shape, so I'm not getting rid of it until it dies). Most of the parts inside are from Ericsson.

    Donuts

Krispy Kremes are disgusting. I mean, really, really gross. I've had chicken from KFC that had less grease. My favorite didn't make the list. I'm partial to a large, cinnamon and glaze donut covered with peanut crumbs that's locally called a "Bear Claw". Yum. Also, I greatly prefer the...

    Utter weirdness with Access

Since I'm logged in as Administrator, creator/owner of the files, have full control from both the share and the files (not that the share perms matter, since I'm on through terminal services) and the problems are within access, not file-level, I don't think that's the case.

    Utter weirdness with Access

Vanilla Win 2000 SP3 File and authentication server. I've only accessed it remotely, but it appears as vanilla as can be. It hosts some Access 2000 .mdb files that a small number of VB applications work with. The DBs are tables-only. No macros, no code. I've been using the apps with test data...

Played with the G5 1.6 and 1.8 yesterday...

On NT, or even Win2000, it's easy to get to places where you can type faster than the letters can be displayed. This was absolutely the norm with everything prior to NT4. With NT4 things started to get better. I'm not sure whether to attribute the increased responsiveness to NT or to better...

All-in-one printer thingies - do they work right yet?

I think you were drooling over my Phaser 850. Which makes way nicer output than any color laser I've seen, but not as nice as one of those 6-tank 2400dpi Epson inkjets.

All-in-one printer thingies - do they work right yet?

Color lasers won't ever replace inkjets. Why? Photoprinting. Laser printers can't do it

Quick question: best Gforce FX5900 card

It's silly to do an "us against them" thing with the graphics-chip makers. Frankly, both sides cheat as much as possible on benchmarks, and I really don't believe there's such a thing as an unbiased source of information about ATI or nvidia. Both nvidia and ATI make products that perform...

    AMD 64 FX-51 Benchmarks out

ATI and Matrox. When I had 16 PCs, it was half-and-half. Now it's 5 and one. (My notebook has an S3 chip in it. I'm not counting that, since it isn't like I had a choice).

    New Chip for Intel

Prescott supposedly has "hidden" 64bit-ness, too, at least according to the Inquirer. Intel's delaying it in the futile hope of finding a market for Itanium.

All-in-one printer thingies - do they work right yet?

Why the heck would anyone out-and-out need an all-in-one? Last I checked, a fax machine was about $50, a printer another $50 and a scanner, $50 more. Each of those devices, save maybe the printer, is well-suited to its job and unlikely to break (printers, of course, die every time you look at...

OS X has a completely 3D desktop. It's not just that it's pretty, it's stuff like extremely high-quality video scaling, too. The system would probably be quite a bit more responsive with a fast 3D card. May I also remind everyone, as someone who has used NT since the 3.1 release, that early...

Best DVD Burner for less than $200.

DVDShrink rules. There's a miniscule quality difference between it and my other favorite, Pinnacle InstantCopy, but the time factor - probably 10 to 1 in Shrink's favor - really, really makes it a worthwhile choice. IfoEdit is too damn complicated. I used it for about a week in favor of, oh...

    Getting In Shape

I bought a weight machine-thing today. Er, more precisely, I traded an air conditioner for it. It's about 7' tall, has two benches and any number of pulleys and swiveling doodads on it. There's 300lbs worth of plates. It says "Marcy by Impex" on it. Of course, I figure that dragging the...

    Redhill.net.au: 1 year, 0 updates

Well, we rather need some feedback from Tannin, but assuming that we get it, the right thing to do is probably to break things up into sections (CPU, hard disk, Monitors, Video cards, maybe?) with one or more people working on each section. Tannin can probably drag himself indoors long enough to...

    Can format my RAID drives

At one point during the early moments of the XP install process, it says "Press F6 to install drivers." It's only there for a moment. In NT4 and 2000, the installation actually stops to remind you. They're serious. If you don't do that, it's not going to see all your drives.

My voice is probably a bit higher than it probably sounded. We're always gravelly when we wake up and I've been having a wonderful time with sinuses lately anyway. I also tend to deepen it while I teach. Helps with projection. I am however, neither frenetic nor squeaky. Tannin sounds nothing...

    How do people meet people?

Hard to explain. Part would be that I'd think I'm imposing. This is as much a product of the mores of the region where I live as anything else. Interesting "survey" - user comments on Raptors

Also, WRT Raptors, I have run across them perhaps half-a-dozen times now, and more than any other drive I can remember, they have been as non-uniform as can be. I think I mentioned before about the noise: Some of them are as quiet as any modern 7k drive. Others have had the (SCSI) Barracuda...

Egads, I hope you aren't pushing 22" displays on ALL your customers. :) Or 17" LCDs for that matter? For new displays I am deeply fond of the KDS XF-7T. I buy them new for a smidge over $100. They're 12x10 but .25dp and do 10x7 @ 100Hz+ and seem to have uniformly nice, bright screen image...
