I am not smart enough to call Australia

Tannin says it does. Howell said couldn't get it to work either. BTW, if someone wants to test this theory and bother Tannin by phone, I know that the flat rate for calls to Oz by 10-10-629 is $.09 a minute (no fee or subscription charge), which is EXTREMELY cheap.

I am not smart enough to call Australia

I know of no other way to explain it. I thought I might, just to do something different, ring RedHill in the middle of its business day, which happens at about 11PM according to the clock on my wall. So I dialed the number using the instructions I found on dataandtime.com. Didn't work. "Your...

I'm not a goth. I wear khaki trousers, black sneakers and solid-color tshirts (yes, one of them is pink) every day of my life. Sometimes I wear a sport coat, when I have to look dressed up. Google Image Search for Goths. I couldn't possibly be bothered to spend that much time dressing to go out.

I have a small collection of Cthulhu items - including three different plush ones, sitting on my desk at work. I do this because several people I work with have stacks of way-too-cute beany babies on their monitors and I just kind of wanted a different take on that decor (anyone ever seen a goth...

You're booting off SCSI and have a Promise controller. This can be a recipe for trouble. Can you see the disks individually? If you just attach them and start Windows does do you have a bunch of drives or just your SCSI stuff without making an array in the Promise BIOS? FYI, I've done 1TB with...

Current boards: I imagine the Gigabyte 7VAX (P) deserves a mention. Probably also one of the nforce2 mainstays, like the Epox 8RDA or the Abit NF7. Others? Tannin like Albatron. P4s? No idea. Current drives: Samsung Spin40s and 80s (120s and 160s, too, but probably not for Tannin's customers)...

The machine in question is an XP2500 with 512MB RAM running 2000 Server. Perhaps because I'm not a regular IE user, it takes longer to start up the first time. Firebird loads more or less instantly (maybe 1 second delay). IE definitely does not, requiring about 8 seconds before the window is...

Most of my complaints have at least a partial solution in the Advanced Prefs tab. It's just... just very organized. Haven't found a setting to turn off autocomplete, either. Firebird starts faster than IE on the computer I'm using right now, by probably 3 - 5 seconds.

Tannin's web site is undoubtedly a fantastically useful place. I visit there fairly regularly and send others there even more regularly. Still, it's been a year since the last update (Sept. 7, 2002). Since summer is coming in Ballarat, we know no one is going to update it until, oh, March or...

Doubtful. What I've been told is that you're kept in a ward with security that prevents you from leaving. Not a cell or anything, just a combination of alarms and burly guys who really don't want you to go anywhere until someone says it's OK. You're held in "observation", probably medicated...

Cheerio is a british colloquialism (i.e. slang). It's used as a salutation. Similar to "aloha", I've heard it used in place of both "Hello" and "Goodbye". It's also a tasty oat-based breakfast cereal in the US. So when fool or one of the other Brits says "Cheerio", you know he's saying "Bye"...

Advice for wife's new Christmas computer

IMO the only advantage nForce2 has is the Soundstorm encoder. If you aren't interested, I think the Via chipsets are a better choice. The Via KT600 is a little slower, yes, but this is a difference expressed in tenths of a percentage point. The KTxxx chipset has been around forever and IMO...

I know the 8500 is theoretically a little faster than the 9100 and 9200 but both of the latter are a little cheaper and by-and-large you'd need to do benchmarking to notice the difference. That's why I don't have a problem with recommending the 9x00s over the 8500. I can't say I've had any...

    RedHat

RedHat 8 and 9 should both work with the slightly less-nice UltraTX and highpoint controllers. RedHat *IS* a nice environment. There's a lot less cruft in a redhat install than in, say, a Mandrake set up.
