    Photography Advice

Here are my thoughts to this moment: 1. I need to do something in my life that involves, at least occasionally, going out of doors and moving around a bit. I don't do that right now. Particularly the moving part. I do very little of that. Outside for me is the place between my car and a...

Canon's horrible abortion of a web site now lists a "Pro 1", an 8MP camera with a 7x optical zoom. Its price is certainly reasonable - $1000 (probably $900 retail, I'd imagine). Anyone have any thoughts? 'cause I certainly hadn't heard of this one, and it seems like a happy medium between the...

I have a client - the commodities traders who are funding my interest in digital cameras - where browsing porn is an acceptable down-time activity (It's an office with 11 guys and a 6Mbit internet connection. Go figure). Anyway, these guys - except the two I convinced to switch to Firebird -...

Sigh. License. Remember that thing? On the blue screen? Near the beginning of the XP install process? The one you no-doubt-very-quickly hit F8 to bypass? I don't remember the exact terms but among other things, XP is supposed to be limited in terms of total number of inbound connections...

There's the small matter of legality as well, blake. The XP license mandates a maximum of 10 network connections even if there are technical ways around the built in software limits. For a business, that's not a trivial problem.

Yes, I'm asking a lot of divergent questions here. And I've been trying to read up where I can, online. Any suggestions for books that might be helpful? Thanks for the heads up on the Nikon, Pradeep. I've pretty much been looking at Canons up to now, given past experience and preferences. The...

That's more common than you might think. One of the reasons I hold out hope against all rationality in my personal situation. A lot of folks who make that determination slip back and forth quite a bit, and there's certainly a great deal of social pressure to be straight. Several folks I knew in...

    Mini-review: Plextor ConvertX

My day job as a trainer sometimes offers me opportunities I wouldn't otherwise take. Last week one of those options came in the form of $500 to spend on random video capture hardware. Since I already have a collection of Conexant-based LeadTek cards I'm going to use in class, the $500 went to...

Anyone have a favorite map yet? IMO the "Tokara Forest" DM map is awesome, gorgeous. Which probably means no one will ever play it because the background is so detailed. I don't like the updated version of "Morpheus". It was my favorite map in the original UT, but in the new one, it's a lot...

I've noticed, from having LGB acquaintances (outside the obvious one) that relationships seem a lot more... fluid. Especially with the ladies. I'm saying it's not. I believe there are six places in the state where you can legally buy packaged liquors today, in 2004. Not silent as such (talk to NRG about that). I just want "quiet enough" - so when I'm listening to soft passages in music, I don't feel the need to turn up my stereo. However, I did think a 10k6 was too loud for my taste. Spin up, idle, seeks... it's not a quiet drive IMO.

Candid photography is a lot easier without the ~1 second delay between shots a lot of digitals seem to have, even with, say, "48x" CF media. Dell selling Opterons

Around 10 - 12 years ago, when Dell was really starting to emerge as THE mail-order OEM, there was a rumor that Dell's boxes were literally built and configured by Intel. As I think back, that might be true. Intel wasn't marketing motherboards then, and it had to start someplace. Dell has...
