Mom. I was on baby duty until 2AM, then woke up at 5AM to start setting up the course and closing roads. Finished clearing the roads by 10PM and was back on baby duty until 2AM again. Then on Sunday I moved us out of our house and into the garage and demo'ed 1200sq.ft. of flooring so the new...

I removed one of the drive bays just because. At the moment it is housing 3x 3TB (RAID-0) and the 512GB 840 Pro The P180 was my previous "favorite case", but this beats it by a mile. It also costs nearly triple the price. 10% on the computer case is not unreasonabe.

The Corsair Obsidian 900D is by far the best case I've ever worked in. The Gigabyte GA-G1.SNIPER 5 just disappears inside of it, with room above for a 3x140 or 4x120 radiator and fans in both push and pull. There is also room for a full row of cable management openings below the MB and two rows...

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

Most of the phones I've used ask once during the setup phase. I'd love to know where that setting is. Also how to actually merge contacts instead of just "link" them (limit to 10 linked accounts).

FreeNAS and ZFS on old hardware

Switches are expensive, but I don't mind fooling with multiple NICs. Getting better speed to my NAS would be nice, particularly once 4k video starts getting more common.

    SSDs & Virtualization

It is a really good idea in my opinion. Running independant physical servers usually leads to tons of underutilized hardware. Going Virtual allows you to minimize waste. But it also means that bottlenecks in the hardware will become an actual issue. HDD IO is a significant bottleneck...

    New monster build

Nah, clock speed is too important to go anywhere but top end (3.5, maybe 3.4). The OC is optional, so I might skip the "K" part to get the other features. Coug, that system would be too noisy. I suspend folding when I am in the office, so it only needs to be quiet when near idle. I think the...

My main rig (in my sig under Work1) has found a buyer. I have a couple weeks to build a new system for myself. From what I can tell, the CPU to get is the 4770K (unless there is some awesome overclockable Xeon I'm not aware of). I still like Gigabyte boards, so the G1.Sniper 5 seems the...

That is sexy. Can't find a price anywhere, and I suspect it is way outside of my range. The US distributor is a 3-hour drive away (Berkeley) so it wouldn't be tough to take the bike up there and have them fit it.

    Cycling

My cassette is a 11-28, and I long for my 12-32 on most days. Beyond 25% grade I can't sit at all in 39-28. The local monster climb means standing for 30+ minutes at a time; not efficient. I wouldn't mind larger gaps between the gears; my useful range is pretty large at this point. Putting a...

And that is the ugly, local ride. My Saturday ride through Pebble Beach is probably the prettiest in the country. Cycling

I set up routes with climbs because it punishes me for my extra weight (probably 25 extra pounds at the moment, 220 total). Of course, that does lead to some awesome downhills. It seems I'm cadence limited at about 49mph (50 in front, 11 in the rear). Might be time to switch to a standard in front.

    Home NAS

If all you want is a backup solution, just go for USB and use the computer it is connected to to "pull" the data from the various machines. Centralized management is a good thing. If you want to step up to a NAS and centralized storage, I really like the Synology products. Of course at that...
