[NEWS] Mandrake has changed a few things . . .

seems reasonable to me. I'll still be about to get my non-beta release quick, or can choose to wait for the patched version a few months later. Or (more likely), I can do both.

    RAID 0 - a call for a metareview

hey all - we've discussed at different times the possibility of SF doing metareviews of sorts in which we gather all available reviews of a product/technology, and critically appraise them to come to a sort of final judgement. This is done all the time in clinical research when there are a...

Onboard vs. PCI sound and LAN

Hey all - so as many of you know I recently rebuilt my main machine. I decided to use my old(ish) SB Live sound card and disabled the onboard AC97 audio thinking that this would relieve my CPU of much of the sound duties and give better sound. On the other hand I went with the onboard LAN...

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

Good point. Although now that I try to duplicate what I said before I cannot. I noticed the problem mostly when Windows had just booted but stuff was still loading. Now when I test it well after a boot it's better. And this is even loading programs for the first time to try to mimize the...

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

Dido to what Coug said. SiS stuff scares me, as does ECS. If I were trying to build a budget killer gaming box I might bite, but I don't have time to mess around. And from what I've seen the performance difference is small.

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

well, on Friday the parts came. Everything is together and running nicely. Got the MSI K8T Neo up and running on the first attempt. Not OCing, and the system is nice and stable. Ran Prime95's mixed torture test all night long without a problem. Now the question is: is it as responsive as...

What to do with an extra HD?

last I checked, it seems gaming performance is really independent of HD speed....so I'll probably be just fine relegating my old Atlas drive to be the Windows drive if I have used up all the Cheetahs with the Linux system.

What to do with an extra HD?

I used to keep "My Documents" on a second HD separate from the OS so I could nuke the OS and keep my documents. But given my current school situation and the fact that I keep many such small files on my school laptop and/or on the network, I doubt I'll have much to put in my /home directory...

What to do with an extra HD?

Nope, I typically put apps on the OS HD. The 120 contains MP3s, lectures, etc that will be quickly moved to my wife's 200 GB drive shared on the network. Not sure what I will do with the 120 after that.

What to do with an extra HD?

so, long story, but I've ended up with an extra Seagate Cheetah 18XL. I had two and was planning on putting WinXP Pro (hey, a med student has to have some gaming fun) on one, and Linux as the other as my main OS. Now I've got 3 Cheetahs. I must be getting distracted by something...

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

Exactly. I guess you need a willing sherif to sign some paperwork. He said it cost about 10K for the gun at 12K all together. Yeeeeouch! But it felt good to rock on full auto :) 3-5 round bursting was very fun. And the load was light enough that I could keep most of the 3-5 rounds on the...

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

quick question here: why on earth are you guys complaining about plain ol' 33 Mhz 32-bit PCI slots? For what we're talking about (high-end workstation) do you really need to push the >110 MB/s that Santilli was talking about? Are the photoshop files truely huge and really benefit from a...

    Building a (really cheap) Server

could it be a GigaE adaptor? My router is only 100 bT....maybe the GigaE on 100bT somehow gives 400Mbps....and it really is 400 it would seem.

    Building a (really cheap) Server

so I'm test streaming an MP3 from my wife's maching to my Dell Inspiron laptop. Surprize, surprize, it works. In Windows Task Manager it lists the link speed as 400 Mbps - I thought I was on a 100bT network. My network utilization is 0.03%, which by my calculation means that I'm using about...

    Building a (really cheap) Server

hey all - here's the deal. My wife and I both like listening to our MP3s. I also use my school's Lectures Online system, so I often have a few GBs or more of lectures that I need to have available. I want to be able to access these on any maching in our appartment - two laptops, my desktop...

are my Cheetah 18 XL's slow?

did you mean that you're running a Cheetah 18XL? Or do you mean that since your 'Cuda 18XL is still peppy my Cheetah 18 XL should be as well?

are my Cheetah 18 XL's slow?

just curious about how my Cheetah 18XLs compare to modern IDE drives (7200 RPM/8 MB cache drives, and raptors). They seem to be nice and speedy still. Just wondering if I'm missing out and should spring for a new HD (Raptor?) for my boot drive.

Why do people love the Barracuda ATA drives?

it seems many people think the world of Seagate's Barracuda ATA's. Maybe they were competitive when they switched from SCSI to ATA (does anyone know if they kept the same internal mechanics? I doubt they did...), but it seems ever since then they trailed the competition significantly, except...

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

there are numerous reviews - Tom's Hardware I believe is one of the few that specifically compares a number. Beware - it seems the early reviews (October) have many gripes that have since been addressed. I'm going with the MSI K8T Neo board personally.

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

for someone OK spending $200 on a chip, you could go P4 2.6 GHz, an Athlon XP 3000, or an A64 3000. Now, why not go A64, since it will sometimes perform a bit better than the AXP 3000, plus gives you the possibility of running 64 bit stuff? Plus, they seems to outperform the P4 2.6 easily...

    Athlon64 3000 - who's taking the $215 plunge?

... and if the AXP line is coming to an end (which the current socket 754 may be as well), it would mean I'd be stuck with a system that is a little more obsolete a little quicker than an A64. So again, which is the better system?

Of course, I'd prefer using a pinout that will be around for a while, but I'm not sure if that's incredibly important for me right now. I wouldn't plan on upgrading the system for a number of years. When the time comes, I would do another chip/motherboard/RAM upgrade. PCI express? How will...

I've got a few concerns with using a photo inkjet printer: cost, quality, and speed. Since Pop will be purchasing a laser printer already, it doesn't seem like a big huge deal to make it a color laser. But perhaps a separate printer for the photosystem would be a little bit easier to use (no...
