Lunar, I think I'd go with option #2, from the choices you list. I just don't have a high opinion of Maxtor drives these days. I don't have a terribly high opinion of Seagate, either, but in this case I think it's the lesser of the two evils.

If an interface is specified as controlled by DHCP, I believe it will continue to make requests until it receives an address. You could always ifconfig your DHCPless interface to something static and then do "ifconfig eth0 (or whatever) auto-dhcp" when your server is back up and running.
