    Tasmanian Tigers Not Dead Yet

I just enjoyed the hell out of typing "Giant sock-puppet eating predators". There's a hilarious mental image there, somewhere.

    How do people meet people?

It isn't like I have a whole lot else to do. Work is good. I get paid for doing something I enjoy. Not a lot of down sides to that one. Man, I don't see anything but roadblocks. Part of me says that I'd be best off if I cut myself off completely for a good long while. Another part says I should...

    How do people meet people?

"Normal" is being able to have enough of a shared experience in life to have a common point for conversation. I work 90+ hours a week. I spend the rest reading about computer stuff or playing around here. Or sleeping. Not a lot to go on, is there?

    How do people meet people?

You people are all a lot more... normal? Socially functional? Than I am. As a rule, I'm not a person one introduces others to. My coworkers mostly don't even attempt to have conversations with me (nor I them. Not a whole lot in common with them. Or anyone else).

    How do people meet people?

Reason for question: I visited eharmony.com at the suggestion of a coworker who, to put it diplomatically, thinks I need a girlfriend (not the phrase she used). I went through a LONG questionaire, only to be told "One in five people isn't compatible with anyone, according to our methodology."...

Actually, that's in the movie, too. The bit about need a substantial deposit and a background check. Again, this isn't someone who takes an anti-gun stance.

    Bowling for Columbine

I prefer the more cerebral left-wing talking head humorist-type (e.g. Al Franken). Moore makes a lot of emotional appeals and doesn't get too wrapped up in details. As I said above, I agree with a lot of what Moore says. He *is* shrill. Purposefully so. He jokes about it in the movie (When he...

    Problem with SVCD

I think you've got an attentuation issue Blake. Try using a higher gauge cable or move some equipment so you can do a "troubleshooting" set up just to check. You might also try to make sure there are as few kinks and bends as possible in the cable. TV out is lousy as long as there's a TV...

Yeah, blocking ICMP packets is one of those big no-nos that just isn't supposed to be done.

    Bowling for Columbine

Apparently, he was a state marksmanship champion while he was in high school. To me it didn't sound like he was saying "take away guns" at any point, but the central theme to the movie is "Why are Americans so violent?". The question doesn't get answered. Yes, he pushes his political agenda...

Whats it mean when I get "Pinged"?

nslookup is a standard program for translating host names into IP addresses. If you're using 2000 or XP or any kind of *nix, drop to a shell prompt and do "nslookup [ip address]" and it should tell you the hostname for that IP, if it's known.

    Bowling for Columbine

Bowling for Columbine just came out on DVD, at least in the US. 1. I thought it was a fantastic documentary. 2. It's about guns, and it's admittedly by a "shrill voice" of the left, Michael Moore. 3. ... who happens to be a member of the NRA, an organization not known for its leftist politics...

Whats it mean when I get "Pinged"?

They're pings. More than likely a script kiddie or some kind of worm is scanning ports on your machine, and everyone else's on your subnet, for some kind of vulnerability. If you've got an up-to-date firewall package and all your OS patches in place, and you aren't doing something silly with...

    Advice on wireless broadband router

I've got a Toshiba e750 (pocketPC) that gives a numeric indication of signal strength on its integrated 802.11. That's almost entirely the reason I own it; when I bought it I expensed it as a "signal meter". ;)

    Advice on wireless broadband router

802.11 is incredibly frustrating. My first 802.11A router couldn't maintain at 30% signal at 10 feet with a clear line of sight. My second works just fine at up to about 75 feet in any direction as far as I can tell. You WILL find dead zones in any 802.11 service area or places where signal...

    Advice on wireless broadband router

Absolutely. 802.11anything is shared bandwidth, like USB. Real-life, you'll get about 1MB/sec from a dedicated 802.11B and about 4MB/sec from A or G. Thing is, if nobody will notice, is it really worth the extra, say, $30 a node to go G?

    Advice on wireless broadband router

You didn't. I was just trying to save you some money. The thing is that they probably won't use the capabilities of "G" and I'm fairly certain that "G" equipment is generally more expensive than "B".

Buying a LCD in the next day and need advice

Things that start, phonically speaking, with a vowel, are singularly referred to as "An". Things that start with a phonic consonant start with "A". In this case, we're pronouncing the sound "E" as the first phoneme in the word LCD - ell-see-dee. So it gets an "An".
