Merging Computers Part II: the media center

Let us compare, for just a moment. Tivo: Void warranty. Open case. Clone drive with prepared Linux box. Run Tivo-specific setup programs. Install drive. Pray you did it right and didn't just trash your Tivo. PC: Open case. Install drive. Run disk setup utilities (fdisk, disk management...

POLL: who is your favourire LOTR character?

I saw "The Two Towers" today. Good gods, it was as perfect a movie as anything from my imagination. Three hours long and over in an instant, with an emotional impact that left me on the verge of tears for 2/3rds of the movie. I love the look of these movies. Sweaty, ragged and dirty...

Merging Computers Part II: the media center

Some advice from someone who has a PC/home theater that needs 14 electrical outlets... 1. Tivo is generally cheaper. They're basically pretty cool, but It's super-easy to just add another hard drive to a PC, and as much as PC-based VR software sucks, that just can't be overlooked. 2...

    Neverwinter Nights

    1. The people with GF3s and ATI8500s did NOT have smooth gameplay @ 800x600 with all the doodads turned on. Whether they noticed or not is another matter (most of them didn't). 2. Yes, there's a DM console that can be operated in real time. The guy who was running it basically dropped extra...

If someone could package up an installer that actually installs both the client and the service-making-thing, that'd be helpful. I tried doing it by hand (download/install client then install/use service-thing), only to have the service fail to start for no reason at all. I haven't had time to...

Anyone else have/play this game? The reason I ask is that I went to a LAN party to be the paid-support guy (on-the-spot upgrades/troubleshooting/CD Copier/game-cracker/no-beer for the young-uns enforcer). I was expecting to see people play lots of different stuff, and indeed there was early talk...

    glassy computer desks

As I understand things, the ergonomics of the upward-facing display are better than those for standard monitor-on-top designs. That said, genuis thrives on clutter, and the more stuff that's on my desk, the better I like it. :)

If I ever get everything running, I think we'll probably be just about evenly matched. Do your machines get turned off at night? 12x XP2100 1x XP1800 1x XP1700 2x XP1600 9x Tbird1200 ... and if you want to get really competitive, I can always ramp up 40 or so more K6-2/P3 class systems. :P...

    Front Mounted USB/Firewire/Audio Ports

Serously, is there anyone here who would buy an Abit Max board? The two times I've tried to hook up front USB have been a dismal failure. Once because the case had a block connector instead of individual cables, the second time because, well, I don't know why. Maybe I can't read or something...

Will a 1000 MHz slot 1 PIII work in an AX6B motherboard?

I can't comment on that specific board, but I put a lot of fast Celerons (600s and 700s) on LX-based boards that didn't support anything like a 10x multiplier, and they worked OK. I'm not sure about pricing on that chip, but a 1.3GHz Duron and a fairly decent motherboard should run well under...

.tar.gz is your friend. Using auto-updates - I don't care whose - is a sign the terrorists have won. To be a tad less sarcastic, why were you updating anything? "Just because" is the wrong answer, of course, just as it's the wrong answer with Windows. Better security or new features you'll...

Looking for a Combo DVD/RW drive... what do you think?

I've played with combo players in a few laptops (generally less than satisfactory as burners - I should not get a buffer underrun on an otherwise idle 1.8GHz machine), and I've read more than a few reviews of the combo units, and so far as I can tell, you're better off with two drives if you've...

Average CPU speed consumers are using

Of course, the Pentium 60 is all alone as functioning at a 60MHz bus with a 1x multiplier - in part to ensure that Intel's PCI came to dominate PC expansion buses, rather than VLB (the "local bus" refering to the fact that VLB operated at the same frequency as the CPU). My best guess, from...

I'll bet if you asked Fushigi really nice, he could come up with a better source tape for you. :) One thing I don't like about the 8500DV, compared to the other ATI capture cards, is that the interface to its breakout box detaches from the PC VERY easily. Anyone else having a problem with that?
