I too have organized my data such that I can find anything I want pretty quickly. In those few cases that I can't, the horrid built in windows file search does the job.

For the paranoid (me), I think encrypting + secure wiping is a good idea. For me the time taken to secure erase is no big deal; just let it run overnight.

In addition to the suggestions above, consider this: Didn't many early USB chipsets have this problem? Large transfers getting corrupted? Of course in those days large thumb drives weren't available and people used hard disks in external enclosures with USB interfaces. If you can test this...

My VMWare Server key has expired - I have to figure out how to get a new one. It's idiotic that a "free" product has a key that expires. I had opbtained the key back when it was in "beta", but had never installed the product.

I lived with this problem for years on my Win2k m/c. My new XP Pro m/c doesn't have this problem (and I'm thankful for that!).

I built my new system in November (2006) with a floppy drive. Still don't trust that it's not needed. I do have a USB floppy drive as well; it's a YE-Data and is rated 2x speed, which is apparent during use.

Isn't there a performance penalty for filling up a disk beyond 70%? Of course this doesn't matter if the data is just archived on the drives with zero to infrequent access.

I have sometimes found a bad memory module by swapping slots. In their original slots, they will pass memtest. When the mem modules are swapped with each other, an error will show up. It's a very long shot, but worth trying if you're despo.
