Basically, there is no job in the entire universe that is as torturous as a sales job. Go watch Glengarry Glen Ross and be glad you have that whole medicine thing to fall back on. Coffee is for closers.

I can't handle this not having work to do. I don't have any contracting work scheduled until June, and my teaching schedule is more-or-less clear as well. I slept 34 of the last 48 hours. No idea how I'm going to make it through next week. :(

RLL drives - blast from the past!

More than likely, the drive wasn't an MFM drive, nor RLL encoded. It was probably formatted with Stacker or Doublespace on it. Ages ago, ,we used to basically compress our whole hard disk and selectively uncompress just the parts that were needed. Turned computers into slugs, most of the time...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

I have a PC that, if I lowered myself to install the 8800GTX I have, literally could not be made faster with any commodity part. It is as top of the line as things get. 4GB RAM, 3.6GHz+ CPUs etc. And there's not a damned thing I actually want to play. Nothing. Again. I have a whole month of...

Asus strikes again, and what to do about it?

Assuming you are using the precompiled kernel, you will boot a non-smp kernel (no harm there!) and you'll probably have to configure the new NIC with YaST. It's never a bad idea to make a backup but it should be straightforward to make the switch you need.

I will have five total when I get these. Some will be given away, though. I was actually waiting for a BoC. Usually when they do the woot-off on a Thursday, the BoC hits between 4PM and 6PM on Friday. No BoC, but since I had the page reloading every 3 seconds I was well-poised to snag my monkeys.

    Least awful vomit box

Some .wmv files are problematic under linux. WMV is a common format on for-pay porn sites (e.g danni.com) since it can be copy protected. There are ways around the copy protection on Windows, such as fraps. Adult torrent sites generally offer the same content with protection stripped, and those...

Asus strikes again, and what to do about it?

You should be able to get something with AM2 and Nforce4. 6100/6150-series boards are basically nforce 4s and they're basically fine in Linux. For what it's worth, Linux isn't likely to puke or kernel panic from a hardware change. There's a decent chance you could just pop in whatever and the...

New video card doesn't like OC

I think those guys mostly don't know what the hell they're talking about. But then, I'm basing that on the god-awful signature graphics they're using. Well, that and thinking that a 500W power supply isn't enough to handle a fairly vanilla computer like yours.

There's not too much wrong with onboard video these days. GMA3000 and nv6100 can both do DX9 well enough to make UT2004 or WoW playable. R200's probably pretty good, too. The 7900GS does seem to be a bargain in terms of graphics power, for the money. It's still an nVidia product and therefore not worthy of my money, but seeing one side-by-side with a much more expensive -GT, the smaller one seems like a better deal. I don't know why you don't have inexpensive...
