We tried that in the 70s. Everyone ignored it. I know of at least one sign on I-74 just outside the little town where I grew up that says "Peoria: 100 kilometers" (not km, mind you, kilometers).

    Logitech Keyboard sillyness

I have a Logitech Ultra X-2 Keyboard that I've become quite fond of. This is a keyboard that uses a laptop-like key mechanism with plastic buckles beneath the keys. The other night, my 13lb. male cat decided to dive-bomb this poor keyboard, landing squarely on a couple of the keys (b and n)...

    Musings on a new PC

Anyone have any thoughts on these budget PCIe cards? The choices I see are: GF6200 ($35), X300SE ($45), GF6500 ($45), X550 ($50), GF7300GS ($70), and x1300 ($75). $75 being my limit for a low-end card. I'm not doing the building here, so I included the nvidia "options". ;)

Don't EVER plug a standard motherboard into an eMachine case

Er... just so I know: were the wires on the USB connector weird colors or was there any indication on the board itself? I've found off-brand boards that used an odd USB connector before and stopped from attaching "standard" front USB to them because the +5V (normally red) wire didn't match the...

It may have already passed for some folk, but sometime very soon it will be 1:02.03AM on April 5th of '06. Unless you're in Europe, where the neatness of that date won't happen until May 4th.

    Ultra low-end dilemma.

Of course, Coug is still talking about a Via-based platform. "Cheaper" they may be, both ATI and nvidia chipsets are both out of the realm of the truly low-end machine.

Humor me, o new guy. The first few things I see suggest that top-end Celerons might be a reasonable alternative to top-end Semprons, but that's not what we're talking about here. Are you suggesting that there's some critical difference in the mainboard chipset for the Celeron over the Sempron...

I'm starting to get annoyed with Dell Tech Support

I just spent an hour and a half replacing the system fan in an Inspiron 8200. Every single other component in the system had to come out to replace a part that probably cost $2.00. The sad thing is, I had the old fan completely off and out of the system in about 10 minutes. I spent the rest of...

    Ultra low-end dilemma.

There's no question in my mind that the Sempron is the way to go. Tannin's already covered the "why" pretty well, but as I believe I've said before, the $300 AMD machine you're talking about really isn't a bad computer anyway. What can you complain about, besides not having some massive amount...

    Housecleaning Standards

OK, topic #2: Keyboard/Mouse Schmutz. I'm far from blameless on this one. If I'm gaming my hands sweat a little and grey funk builds up on my trackball. However, I clean mine at least once a week. However... Does anyone know how to prevent that stuff from building up in the first place...

    Housecleaning Standards

Sol, standard vacuum cleaners have brushes that spin and contact with each other. In other words, they generate static as part of normal operation. As a background to my previous comment, I'd like to add that I have a rather extreme allergy to common dust. I've worked in manufacturing...

Treo 700w as a car computer?

Samsung's got a pretty nice phone in the same space. It has built in 802.11 and a fairly impressive camera builtin, but the battery life is crappy. The more interesting issue is, how would you really use it in a car? Aren't front-seat mounts for those things illegal?

That does look good. The only problem is that it's made by LG, a company whose hardware I've had consistently poor experiences with. :( The Samsung SCH-a970 looks a little better in terms of features, but it's a full ounce heavier than the vx8100. That's a PITA, since I carry my phone in my...

Cheapy Toshiba/Compaq/HP notebooks can be found for $400 if you manage to hit Walmart or Best Buy on Sunday morning just as they open. You won't hear this very often but: I agree with Stereodude. I think the first thing that needs to happen with solid-state players is that everyone needs to stop copying Apple or trying to copy Apple. At this point, no one is going to buy an Apple-like player when they can buy the real thing...

    WD for sale?

My first thought was "There's still Hitachi." Tannin, if you want to blaze a trail with WDamnsung, feel free, but I'm guessing that if Samsung eats WD it's because they like the WD product better, and that will pollute future Samsung drives, just like Quantum polluted Maxtor.
