How often are the feeds updated? Either the list ordering for the "All Forums" feed is way off or it's way behind the current state of things. Looks like most of the posts listed as new were made about 12 hours ago.

Found this while I was browsing a minute ago. I thought it was rather funny -------------------------------------- This morning there was a knock at my door. When I answered the door I found a well groomed, nicely dressed couple. The man spoke first: "Hi! I'm John, and this is Mary." Mary...

Kiddie Game Playing in XP: issues and thoughts

As a general rule, XP runs about 85% of the entertainment software that has been made for Windows. Games are usually not the problem, especially since almost no games worth playing were made for Windows prior to the release of DirectX, and XP supports DirectX just fine. 16-bit games are the only...

I strongly prefer the Verbatim discs I get at Sam's Club. Usually $40 (but sometimes $30) for 50 16x +Rs. Some of the Walgreens drug stores in my area sell Vibrators - marketed as "back massagers". No, I'm not kidding. And yes, they have more than one model, as small as fingertip models up to...

I can't surf after some time of idling

We'll see. Of course, there are huge *'s next to all of this, since there's literally no way to have a control for any of this. I can't control what anyone else is doing with a torrent or what anyone else might be doing on my cable segment.

    FireFox v1.0.7 - something buggy

In a way, that's not as offensive as some other places to put ads - a Pepsi machine in City of Heroes (CoH does have advertisements, for fictional companies like "Mighty Mart" and "City of Gyros", which are fun enough that when I first started playing I ran around looking for all of them) might...

OK, I just did a little bit of testing regarding BitComet the Bandwidth pig. I ifdown'd or disconnected all of the computers but the one I'm sitting in front of. I turned off all network activity on this machine as well. I ran a bandwidth test from Speakeasy's Seattle, WA servers using the...

Another funny thing about how google works: the responses that you get depend on how many servers responded to your search and what their responses were. Do a search for something pathetically common like the letter "e" a few different times and note the vastly different number of responses...

    FireFox v1.0.7 - something buggy

Sob. I remember the earliest days of the web, when even corporate web sites (e.g. sgi.com) had cool stuff on them, and even early portal sites like Netscape's cool site of the day and yahoo.com were utterly devoid of ads. Web sites were about content, and not presentation, and it was marvelous...

    FireFox v1.0.7 - something buggy

I made a post about Filterset G a few months ago in the Toolbox section, but I will repeat it here, for it is a godly and righteous thing. Step 1. Install Adblock. Step 2. Visit http://www.pierceive.com.nyud.net:8090/filtersetg/ (I always hit the Coral cache instead of the regular page, which...

I can't surf after some time of idling

I really like BitComet's download manager. Love it, in fact. But I have noticed, as the obnoxious bandwidth whore at my day job, that only maybe a single 50k down/50k up hoses our 6/1Mbit internet connection to the point that the clerical types in my office start complaining that their Internet...

    HTML vs XML

This really has nothing much to do with XML but... I have need to access around 11TB of data (actually about 6.5TB, but you know, gotta build in some redundant storage and expansion capability). Google gets its results by ranking not only the number of links to a given page, but also the number of visitors the linking pages are thought to have. Newbie question on RAID

If you take an NT3.5 machine, you can format its drive with HPFS and run some OS/2 programs on it (command line ones). You can then upgrade to NT4, where those capabilities still work, and then to Windows 2000, where they will continue to work (although, if you START with Windows 2000, neither...

    DVD Decoder.

I'm not absolutely sure how legal it is, but the Kazaa Lite Mega codec pack (which is free of spyware and other crap - I've checked repeatedly) that's part of my standard install offers six or eight possible MPEG2 decoders. Elecard might be another option. I think their decoder is distributed...

    Newbie question on RAID

Master File Table. The NTFS version of your File Allocation Table. It can be fragmented. Fragmented MFTs are bad because they create lots of extra seeks to get to the files or parts of files that you actually want.
  37. Mercutio

    Newbie question on RAID

Yes, it is. The thing you should be most worried about, from a performance standpoint, is fragmentation of your MFT. When an NTFS volume gets to be about 85% full, I've noticed that performance seems to drop like a stone.

    Video Card advice

As I understand it, the X800GT is a bit faster than the 6600GT, but the nVidia card is a little cheaper. Newbie question on RAID

I can attest that the builtin Windows 2000 defragger can defrag hardware RAID arrays. Also, never defrag a large RAID5 that you need to use anytime in the next month. I'll let someone else do the RAID0-is-usually-a-bad-idea lecture, but I will say that unless you're doing something REALLY...

    System locking up on occasion

Dust reduces the efficiency of your HSF, but generally doesn't present any other problems AFAIK. Your CPU temps are good, right? The VT600RZ is a marvelous motherboard, but I don't think it's a wise expenditure at this point. Also, your current system is an nforce2; sticking with nvidia will at...
